Let’s be real — the Bridgerton fandom never takes news quietly. So when Netflix officially confirmed that Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) will lead Season 5, the internet promptly split into two very loud camps. Here’s everything that’s happening, and why it genuinely matters.

What’s the Bridgerton Story?
Season 4 laid important groundwork for Francesca’s arc. After being happily married to John Stirling, she suffered the heartbreak of his unexpected death. Finding comfort in John’s cousin Michaela — a gender-swapped version of Michael from Julia Quinn’s novels — their bond gradually deepened into something more. Season 5 picks up two years later, with their relationship blossoming into a full romantic arc. It’s Bridgerton‘s first-ever leading queer love story, and showrunner Jess Brownell described it simply as feeling “groundbreaking.”
Author Julia Quinn initially had reservations about the gender-swap but ultimately gave her full backing, noting that Francesca’s season in the books has always been the most emotionally devastating of the series — and she believes the show version will be equally powerful.
Fan Reactions: A Tale of Two Camps
The response online has been genuinely mixed but largely positive. Many fans celebrated the historic representation of a high-profile sapphic love story anchored by a Black woman as co-lead. Others, however, were disappointed — not necessarily about the queer storyline, but because they felt it was Eloise’s (Claudia Jessie) turn in the spotlight. Eloise has been a fan favourite since Season 1, and her romance with Sir Phillip Crane is the next in the book series’ chronological order.
The frustration is understandable. Claudia Jessie has been part of Bridgerton since 2019, and fans feel her character has been sidelined for too long.
What About Eloise?
Not entirely forgotten. Producers have hinted that Season 5 will plant the seeds of Eloise’s romance through letter-writing with Sir Phillip Crane (played by Chris Fulton, who has appeared in earlier seasons), setting up what looks to be a strong Season 6 arc for her. Cold comfort for impatient fans, but a storyline worth watching for.
