The ton is buzzing with anticipation as Netflix unveils the first tantalizing glimpse of Bridgerton Season 4, showcasing Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and newcomer Yerin Ha in what appears to be the most electric meet-cute of the series thus far. The 90-second teaser, released during the Tudum global fan event, captures the pair’s first encounter at a lavish masquerade ball—complete with stolen glances across a crowded room, accidental touches that linger just a moment too long, and that signature Bridgerton romantic tension fans adore.

Showrunner Jess Brownell describes their chemistry as “lightning in a bottle,” while costume designers reveal how intricate period details subtly foreshadow their characters’ intertwined fates.

This season marks a significant departure from Julia Quinn’s book series, with the creative team crafting an original love story for Benedict after skipping his book (An Offer From a Gentleman) in previous seasons. The sneak peek suggests they’re making up for lost time, delivering all the lavish production values, witty banter, and simmering passion that turned Bridgerton into a global phenomenon—with fresh twists that will keep even book fans guessing.

A Match Made in Regency Heaven: Analyzing Bridgerton Electrifying First Look

The newly released footage opens with Benedict Bridgerton nursing artistic frustrations at yet another society event when his world tilts on its axis—enter Yerin Ha’s character (rumored to be named Sophie Beckett, though significantly reimagined from the books), making her debut in a stunning silver-blue gown that seems to shimmer with every step.

Their eyes meet across the ballroom as the quartet plays a familiar yet unrecognizable classical cover of a modern pop hit (fans are already speculating it might be a string version of Taylor Swift’s “Enchanted”). The camera lingers on Benedict’s paint-stained fingers twitching at his side, a subtle nod to his artistic soul recognizing its muse.

What makes this pairing particularly intriguing is how it blends Bridgerton’s signature romantic tropes with fresh cultural perspectives. Ha, a Korean-Australian actress, brings new depth to the period drama’s representation, while Thompson’s Benedict—previously the series’ most carefree sibling—appears poised for a transformative love story. Costume designer Sophie Canale shared with Vogue how she embedded visual storytelling in their outfits: Benedict’s increasingly unbuttoned waistcoats mirror his unraveling composure, while Ha’s character wears subtle embroidery patterns that echo Benedict’s sketchbook doodles seen in Season 3. These details suggest a connection deeper than simple attraction, hinting at the “soulmates” theme showrunners have teased for this season.

Rewriting Romance: How Season 4 Diverges From the Books

Devoted Julia Quinn readers might experience delightful whiplash watching this reimagined version of Benedict’s love story. While the books positioned Sophie as a Cinderella-esque figure, the series appears to be crafting a more empowered counterpart—early production notes describe Ha’s character as “a fiercely independent artist’s model with revolutionary ideals,” a far cry from the book’s more traditional heroine. This aligns with Bridgerton’s pattern of updating Quinn’s stories for modern audiences, as seen with Penelope’s feminist awakening in Season 3.

The masquerade setting remains (a beloved element from An Offer From a Gentleman), but with intriguing twists. Instead of Benedict rescuing Sophie from hardship, the footage suggests their first meeting occurs as equals at the height of society—though rumors persist about hidden identities and class barriers that will emerge as the season progresses. Thompson shared in a Variety interview how this version allows Benedict to “fall first and hard,” reversing typical Regency romance dynamics. “He’s spent seasons as the observer, the artist capturing life rather than living it,” Thompson explains. “Now he’s plunged into emotions he can’t sketch his way out of.”

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Most Romantic Season Yet

The production team has pulled out all stops to make Season 4 the most visually stunning installment yet. The masquerade ball sequence alone required six weeks of rehearsals for the complex waltz that culminates in Benedict and his mystery woman dancing without masks as the clock strikes midnight. Choreographer Jack Murphy revealed they blended traditional Regency steps with more modern, intimate movements to reflect the characters’ instant connection.

Meanwhile, the writing room took inspiration from unexpected sources—showrunner Brownell cites Before Sunrise and Portrait of a Lady on Fire as influences for the season’s more contemplative romantic tone. “We wanted to explore how artists love differently,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s a vulnerability to Benedict that Luke captures beautifully—he doesn’t just see Sophie, he truly sees through her in ways that terrify and exhilarate them both.” This psychological depth, combined with the series’ trademark humor and steam, suggests Season 4 may elevate Bridgerton beyond guilty pleasure into genuinely nuanced romantic storytelling.

Conclusion: A Love Story Worth the Wait

As Bridgerton prepares to deliver its most daring romance yet, the Season 4 sneak peek proves some love stories can’t be rushed. By waiting to adapt Benedict’s book and reimagining it for today’s audiences, the creative team has crafted what may become the series’ defining couple—one that blends artistic passion with emotional depth in ways that feel both timeless and refreshingly modern.
