Breaking News: Intel Launches Altera, a Game-Changer in the FPGA Market

In a groundbreaking announcement today, Intel revealed the official launch of Altera, a standalone FPGA company poised to revolutionize the industry. The FPGA Vision Webcast, led by Chief Executive Officer Sandra Rivera and Chief Operating Officer Shannon Poulin, unveiled a strategic vision aimed at securing leadership in a market opportunity exceeding $55 billion.

This bold move includes expanding the company’s portfolio to offer the only FPGA with AI integrated into the fabric, thus addressing mounting customer challenges head-on. Additionally, the webcast marked the introduction of Altera as the new company’s brand.

Intel Altera: A Vision for the Future

Sandra Rivera, chief executive officer of Altera, emphasized the company’s commitment to reinvigorating the FPGA market by delivering programmable solutions and accessible AI across various key segments, including comms, cloud, data center, embedded, industrial, automotive, and mil-aero. Rivera stated, “We’re leading with a bold, agile and customer-obsessed approach to deliver programmable solutions and accessible AI across a broad range of applications.”

Significance of the Announcement

Altera’s expanded portfolio and roadmap signify a strategic response to the growth in the target FPGA markets across cloud, network, and edge. This expansion also enhances the best-in-class Quartus Prime software and incorporates AI capabilities to address the fast-growing application segment. In light of the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) shaping industries, Altera is well-positioned to address these opportunities with FPGA AI Suite and OpenVINO, generating optimized intellectual property (IP) based on standard frameworks like TensorFlow and Pytorch.

Moreover, Altera’s FPGAs provide flexible solutions to meet evolving market demands, seamlessly integrating critical AI inferencing capabilities and intercepting emerging standards such as PCI Express, CXL, Ethernet, and 6G wireless.

Introducing New Offerings:

Altera announced new products and services tailored to meet diverse customer needs:

  • Agilex 9 is now in volume production, offering the industry’s fastest data converters, ideal for radar and military-aerospace applications requiring high-bandwidth mixed-signal FPGAs.
  • Agilex 7 F-series and I-series devices are released to production, delivering 2x better fabric performance per watt versus competing FPGAs, tailored for high-bandwidth compute applications in data center, networking, and defense.
  • Agilex 5 is now broadly available, boasting the only FPGA fabric infused with AI, superior performance, and 1.6x better performance per watt versus competing products, geared toward embedded and edge applications.
  • Coming soon: Agilex 3, bringing a leading value, low-power line of FPGAs to low-complexity functions for cloud, communications, and intelligent edge applications.
