Manchester City returned to their best at Stamford Bridge as they eased past Chelsea in a 3-1 victory to send them closer to the right end of the table.
The hosts managed to get the ball to the final third on multiple occasions in the opening few minutes but did not manage to test the keeper at all. City, on the other hand, kept the ball extremely well and played short passes between each other to move the ball. It was a typical display of Pep’s philosophy, to keep the ball, and pass the ball.

The Cityzens struck almost out of nowhere as a Kevin de Bruyne pass managed to find Ilkay Gundogan on the edge of the penalty area, who smashed the ball past Edouard Mendy. They followed it up shortly after with another goal coming from the right flank, this time, from a clean finish by Phil Foden to beat Mendy at his near post.
The Blues were then caught out by Kevin de Bruyne on the counter following a free kick on the other end of the pitch to end the first half.

“Chelsea have their first touch since last Tuesday.”
The second half saw City ease up on the pressure, but they could have easily gotten five past the hosts had they kept on going. Chelsea barely managed to come up with anything productive in all their time on the ball, with Callum Hudson-Odoi finding the back of the net in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late.
Manchester City have now conceded a goal after 13 hours in the league, while Chelsea are yet to secure a win against any team in the top half of the table. Chelsea were often caught sleeping in defense, while also looking tired owing to their stacked fixture schedule.

Having had their match against Everton postponed, Manchester City had a clear advantage heading into the game in terms of team freshness and it was the deciding factor in tonight’s game.
The defeat at home will only call for more pressure on Frank Lampard’s shoulders, who now desperately needs a good result to turn things around.
Winning the continental treble is something that every manager aspires to achieve in their career. However, only nine in the history of European football have been fortunate enough to lift all trophies that they can get their hands on.
1. Jock Stein (Celtic) 1966/67
The first manager in the history of Europe to achieve the feat, Jock Stein’s Celtic also managed to win the Scottish League Cup to extend the treble to a quadruple, effectively winning every competition that the club participated in.
2. Stefan Kovacs (Ajax) 1971/72
Kovacs’ Ajax team boasted of having Johan Cruyff in the team, and they managed to embark on the Dutch club’s most successful tenure in their history. Their style of play was known as the original “total football” that is still celebrated to this day.
3. Guus Hiddink (PSV) 1987/88
The end of the 80s saw the last of Dutch football being on the level to complete a continental treble involving the European Cup. Hiddink went on to manage the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea, and came really close to the European Cup final, but not quite.
4. Alex Ferguson (Man Utd) 1998/99
Sir Alex managed to establish himself as one for the history books with the season right before the turn of the century. Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed to turn around a 1-0 deficit against Bayern Munich to deliver the European Cup to the Red Devils.
5. Pep Guardiola (Barcelona) 2008/09
Achieving the feat in his first season with Barcelona, the Catalonian manager completely defied expectations and transformed Barcelona into one of the best and smoothest playing teams that the world has ever seen, with almost all players coming through the academy.
6. Jose Mourinho (Inter Milan) 2009/10
The Special One managed to end Inter Milan’s 45-year wait for European glory, winning all competitions available to the Nerazzurri in the 2009/10 season. Mourinho’s reputation as one of the best became even more solid after winning the continental cup following the victory with Porto.
7. Jupp Heynckes (Bayern Munich) 2012/13
The Bavarians managed to bring the treble to their manager in his last game in charge of the club. The final was the second consecutive one in as many years, having lost to Chelsea the year before on penalties. The Bayern of the following year managed to conquer everything in their path after that loss.
8. Luis Enrique (Barcelona) 2014/15
The trio of Messi-Suarez-Neymar blossomed under Luis Enrique and dominated the mid-2010s as Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets held the fort behind the unbelievable attacking trio.
9. Hansi Flick (Bayern Munich) 2019/20
Hansi Flick remains the only other coach to win the treble in his first season in charge. The former Bayern player managed to lead the team into an almost unbeaten 2020 that saw them win every competition they could compete in.
SC East Bengal finally returned to the winning ways in the first match of 2021. They beat Odisha FC by 3-1 today and sealed their first victory in Indian Super League.
SC East Bengal’s manager Robbie Fowler has made some changes in the line-up today. Raju Gaikwad made his debut today after signing the deal on 1st January.
In the 12th minute of the game, Anthony Pilkington put SC East Bengal into the lead from a close-range header. Raju Gaikwad’s long throw-in ability helped SC East Bengal to score the first goal. In the 39th minute, Jacques Maghoma doubled the lead for SC East Bengal with a thunderous strike.
Odisha FC tried hard to get back into the game but failed to deliver the end product. In the 88th minute, SC East Bengal punished again as debutant Nigerian striker Bright Enobakhare scored his first goal for SC East Bengal. Odisha FC pulled one back as the consolation in the injury time.
After the match, SC East Bengal boss Robbie Fowler said, “It’s always nice to get a win also our first win. That’s one game in five we have lost now. It was a good, professional performance. This club is all about progression and we will try and get for the future. We are building, there is a lot of work to be done and we will continue to do that. It is a great win and a great start to the new year and hopefully, it will continue.”
“I think all the players were impressive. Few of the new players came in. (Anthony) Pilkington was once fantastic, Jacques Maghoma probably had his best game, he was brilliant. All our players were good.”
“We didn’t change our system. We have our style of play and we want to try and keep it simple. When you do that it becomes a bit easy for everyone. It is not about formations or certain players. Players have a role. With the quality we have, even today if we see, Pilkington’s goal, Jacques’ goal. Not to mention Bright (Enobakhare). Bright was fantastic. He made the game so simple. He looks like an unbelievable player.”- he added.

Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier was found guilty of unusual bets by FA. He was hit with a £70K fine and a 10-week ban from football following an investigation into unusual bets placed relating to his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid.
The La Liga side are currently at the top of the league. Trippier is an important part of the team. So they felt disappointed by that ruling as the England international was about to miss many matches.
So now FIFA have temporarily suspended the ban as further investigation will be going on regarding the matter. The offences occurred in July 2019, which is when Trippier joined Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur.
Fifa said the postponement was due to “the request for provisional measures lodged by Atletico Madrid”.
“Following the appeal and, specifically, the request for provisional measures lodged by the club Atletico Madrid, the Fifa Appeal Committee has approved to stay the extension of the suspension until the procedure is over before the committee,” a spokesperson for football’s world governing body Fifa added.
Trippier missed Atletico’s 1-0 victory over Getafe on Wednesday along with the 2-1 win over Alaves on Sunday. But after this ruling from FIFA, he will be allowed to play until the results of the further investigation come out.
In what has been a remarkable turnaround for Stefano Pioli’s AC Milan, the team have managed to stay unbeaten for 14 games in Serie A this season, and are currently the only unbeaten team in Europe’s top five leagues (excluding European competitions).
In an even more impressive way, they have managed to keep a hold of their position at the top of the Serie A table, a point clear of city rivals Inter Milan, who have done a remarkable job under Antonio Conte so far as well, and will be even more focused on the Scudetto with no European competitions to participate in.

The arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from the MLS has been a key factor in the Rossoneri’s success since the get-go this season. The 39-year-old’s leadership skills and dominance in the locker room has been a key factor in getting the best out of all the players.
Hakan Calhanoglu has also been a major influence on Milan’s triumph going forward, with the Turkish midfielder providing 6 assists, and a commendable pass accuracy of 84% in the league.
Portuguese forward Rafael Leao has also been a major revelation this season, having scored and assisted three goals each so far this season.
One of the most underrated aspects of AC Milan’s game is the tremendous work rate of the full-backs, Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria. Hernandez is a threat going forward, as well as resolute in defence, scoring 4 goals and providing 3 so far. The left-back is one of the most underrated players in the continent right now.
Lastly, but surely not least, the presence of Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks is also one of the Rossoneri’s greatest assets, with the 21-year-old being heralded as the best keeper in the league despite his young age. The Italian number 1 has a save percentage of 72%, which is by far the best in the League.
Whether Milan manage to finally break Juventus’ stronghold on the Scudetto is something that still remains to be seen, given that a fair portion of the season is yet to be played. However, they must remain on their toes to get the best out of every match that comes their way for a title winning season, or a return to the Champions League at the very least.
Amidst rumours linking Real Madrid to another shopping spree in the summer of 2021 that would see them invest in the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, Los Blancos seem to have found their prime target for good.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is the name that is being touted as the primary target for Florentino Perez when the ongoing season reaches its conclusion. A fee worth £108 million is being talked about on the internet, which, in today’s transfer market, is a reasonable amount for the current top scorer in the Premier League.
La Liga pundit and former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell had this to say regarding the rumours linking the winger with a move to Spain:
“I could see him Salah fitting in perfectly at Real Madrid.”
“Barcelona are in a transition period and while they may need to invest if Messi goes, I think Real Madrid are a lot more likely a destination than Barcelona right now.”
“They have more of a complete squad and of course they are the current La Liga champions. You know what that club brings, it is a powerhouse.”
Salah has been one of the most important players in Jurgen Klopp’s revival of Liverpool, and has managed to win almost every major trophy available with the Merseyside reds during his time with the club.
Considering that he still has two and a half years left on his contract with Liverpool, the club are under no obligation to part ways with their prized asset. And considering that they hold the high ground in this situation, they could also ask for a higher fee for the Egyptian if they so desire it.

Salah, on the other hand, has been open to a potential move to Spain, saying:
“I think Madrid and Barcelona are top clubs.”
“We never know what is going to happen in the future, but right now I’m focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League again with my club.”
BCCI might have to pay a whopping amount of Rs 906 crore tax if the Union Government declines to grant a full exemption for the ICC T20 World Cup, which is about to held in India this year.
Even if the government grants the partial exemption the board has to pay at least Rs 227 crore tax. The BCCI has missed a couple of deadlines, set by the ICC, for securing full tax exemption. Now, the ICC has given two options — seemingly the final ones — to the BCCI. They are: the T20 World Cup will be relocated to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and other is that it provides an undertaking that if it fails to get the exemption then it will have to meet the tax liabilities, which could be a minimum of Rs 226.58 crore and a high of Rs 906.33 crore.
In 2011, when the 50-over World Cup was held in India, the Manmohan Singh-led government sat on the application from the BCCI for inordinately long, and then Prime Minister himself intervened and granted it at the last minute.
But for the 2016 T20 World Cup held in India, the Modi government granted only 10 percent tax exemption and not full, and because the government had not granted full tax exemption, the ICC has withheld $23.75 million from the share that the BCCI was entitled to receive from the game’s world governing body, and this issue with BCCI insists, is still alive and unresolved.
At the December 24 AGM, the BCCI officials discussed this issue with the general body that comprises its affiliated state associations. But, according to an official who attended the AGM in Ahmedabad, what the house should do as the house was divided over whether the world’s wealthiest cricket board should pay the tax if the government doesn’t grant full tax exemption.
“The matter was discussed for 10 to 15 minutes, after which the house authorised the BCCI office-bearers to deal with the issue. But what was evident was that all the office-bearers were not on the same page vis-a-vis the question of whether the BCCI should forego the hosting rights if the government doesn’t grant full tax exemption. Some members said it was a matter of prestige – izzat ka sawal hai — that India should pay the tax and host the World Cup, if it comes to that,” the official told IANS.
Just a day before the AGM on 24th December, members of BCCI’s affiliates were handed a two-page note as part of agenda item numbers Q – ‘to update on ICC matters’ — and ‘S’ – ‘to update on ICC T20 World Cup 2021 scheduled to be held in India’.
“I don’t think anyone had the time to read the note or grasp the enormity of the issue as everyone was preoccupied with a friendly cricket match, played on the eve of the AGM among the representatives of the BCCI affiliates, followed by the dinner,” he emphasized.
If the government declines, the decision may affect BCCI’s chances of hosting the 50-over World Cup in 2023 which is already allotted to India. Experts say that if the government declined exemption for the 2021 T20 World Cup, it was unlikely that it would change its mind for the 2023 World Cup, which will also require full tax exemption.
Therefore, the tax exemption issue of the 2021 T20 World Cup is closely linked with the 2016 T20 World Cup as the same government that gave only 10 percent exemption in 2016 is in power even today.
“So, the question is simple: If the government had not given full tax exemption in 2016, how can it give it for 2021 World Cup? And, if it grants full exemption for 2021, it will have to, by the same token, give full exemption for the 2016 tournament retrospectively,” said one expert.
Also, if the government grants tax exemption to cricket, it should not deny similar exemptions to other national sports federations as well, because the government should treat all sports bodies equally.
The tax issue has arisen because the ICC’s media rights holder, STAR India, is based in India and the broadcaster pays ICC the money. If the Indian government doesn’t grant tax exemption to STAR India, the premier broadcaster will not pay the entire amount promised to the ICC. And if the ICC doesn’t receive the entire amount from STAR India, the member countries of the ICC will receive less as their share from the world body’s distributions.
Separately, when the ICC allots its tournaments to its member countries, the two parties — ICC and tournament hosting country — sign a host agreement that binds the host to secure full tax exemption. The ICC gives a certain amount to the host country while each match staging association – in BCCI’s case, its affiliated state associations — gets a fixed sum for organizing a match(es). The gate money that is accrued from hosting matches goes to the match hosting association. There are many other conditions besides this.
On July 6 last year, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), which was administering the BCCI at the time, had discussed the $23.75 million withheld by the ICC in a meeting. The CoA noted: “…since the agreement between the BCCI and the ICC in relation to the hosting of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 is governed by English law, the opinion of an English firm should be obtained and the further course of action would be determined based on the said opinion”.
Three months after that meeting, Sourav Ganguly took charge of the BCCI as president, Shah as secretary, and Dhumal as treasurer at the elections held on October 23. The issue of the income tax exemption for the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup in 2023 was already on the table. But little forward movement seems to have been made since October last year.
