How can Tesla’s entry into India affect the Automobile Industry in the country?

Earlier this week it was confirmed by Transport Minister of India, Nitin Gadkari, that US clean energy and electric vehicle company Tesla will “start operations” in India in early 2021. He was optimistic about India becoming the global hub of the automobile industry within five years.

So how does Tesla’s entry into India help the automobile industry of the country? And how sure are we that Tesla will be a success in India?

Government initiatives

One of the most tangible signs of Tesla’s imminent successful expansion to India is the government’s favorable EV regulations and policy initiatives rolled out in recent times.

The Indian government recently unveiled significant income tax rebates for consumers who buy Electric Vehicles, providing a monetary nudge towards EV adoption. The government slashed the GST rate on electric vehicles from 12% to 5%, and in another landmark move, Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Phase II, or FAME India Phase II, was approved by the government. FAME India Phase II has received an allocation of Rs.100 billion ($1.4 billion) for a period of three years, including a proposal of setting up 2,700 charging stations across the country by 2022.

A NITI Aayog report provides a 15-year roadmap for electrification of vehicles in the country which could save India a staggering $60 billion in energy costs and one gigaton of carbon emissions by 2030.

These policy moves suggest the government is “supportive and anxious to bring Tesla to India,” said, Dan Ives, managing director at Wedbush Securities, according to CNBC.

Manufacturing has been noted to be a huge priority for national and state EV policies and both the private and government players want to support  India’s auto manufacturing market as the world shifts to EVs.

“Both national and state governments are eager to attract international EV auto companies,” said Anjali Jaiswal, senior director of the international program, India Team, at Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “In the latest round of policies and in light of the Covid-19 economic downturn, state and national governments are working hard on favorable policies for international EV companies, such as Tesla, while protecting local jobs and sourcing requirements remain a major focus,” she added.

The Government will give their blessings but will the people?

MNCs in India are provided with two choices — dance to the tune of Indian habits or go back. Be it McAloo Tikki and Chicken burgers at the world-famous McDonald’s or the full-crusted pizzas at local joints. Recall any ad for tyres, extra grip is the one common promise you’ll see in those commercials — India’s roads are pot-holed, congested, and unruly that promise to surprise you every mile of the way. Tesla will have to go through some serious ‘Indianisation’ to prove its worth to the Indian citizens on our rough roads. The EV manufacturer will have to turn its cars into rugged monsters to survive here or meet the fate of earlier international hits like Uno by Fiat, a globally successful car that flopped in India since it was too low-floored for our bumpy roads.

Tokyo-based Atsushi Kawahashi, senior director, automotive, at J.D. Power, said balancing optimism about Tesla’s India prospects while tempering expectations is key. “While Tesla is likely to have a huge appeal among Indian car buyers, it will be up against formidable challenges,” he said. “The Indian car market is extremely price and value-conscious, with about 70% of the sales below Rs. 1 million (about $14,000).”

Given Tesla’s current product range, it is likely to enter the premium segment — Model 3 sells for around $40,000 in China — to be successful in India the prices will have to be cut down to at least in the $25,000 range.

How could this be a win-win for the Indian market as well as Tesla?

India’s potential as a lucrative market for Electric vehicles is undeniable and the country represents a big opportunity for Tesla, just how big is difficult to determine.

“India will be as big as China, and maybe even bigger as there are no trade or geopolitical conflicts impacting the background,” said Craig Irwin, an analyst at Roth Capital.

Ives said Musk has had a few false starts in the past but contends India is and will remain a high priority for Tesla and its CEO in the coming years. “The demand picture has changed and now with Giga 3 build-out in China, Berlin, and Austin, India is next,” he said, pointing to EV demand and the population growth in India as indicative of a massive market.

In five years India will represent 10% of the overall demand for Tesla, according to Ives’ projections.

What Vivek Wadhwa, a distinguished fellow at Harvard Law School’s Labor and Worklife Program, pointed out also considerably increases India’s relative attractiveness. The uncertainty posed by the ongoing U.S.-China trade spat and China’s questionable intellectual property regime.

“I am sure Elon [Musk] is worried about the tensions between the U.S. and Chinese government,” Wadhwa said. “Tesla could be kicked out at a moment’s notice. The Chinese government would not hesitate to do this once it has stolen whatever technology it needs from Tesla.”

India on the other side has bilateral agreements with many of the countries that Tesla plans on expanding next, and, therefore, could become a production hub. “They [Tesla] are in a strong position as right now in the EV market it’s Tesla’s world and everyone else is paying rent,” Ives said.

But with a large production base in the neighborhood in China, does Tesla plan on manufacturing in India? Or importing from China? A great deal of Tesla’s India story could be driven by its decision here.

Wadhwa said Musk could choose to import, but it would be a mistake. “I don’t think he understands geopolitics,” he said. “A better strategy would be to import the required components and build an assembly plant in India.”

That’s because it would get Musk tremendous support from the Indian government, and also help transform the Indian automobile industry from within and with closer detail. “Otherwise, he may end up getting frustrated by the bureaucracy,” Wadhwa said.

Moreover, the recent military standoff between India and China and India’s continuous policies against Chinese products does not make the import option viable.

According to a Bloomberg report, India sold only a little more than 8,000 units in 6 years, China sells more than that in two days. However, the Indian automobile industry is going to undergo a huge turnover for the good if everything falls into place for Tesla in the country. With fuel prices soaring high, Indian consumers will now be on the lookout for other options, and there’s no better option than Electric Vehicles, which will also help the environment of our populated country.

Zidane wants to quickly renew the deals of key Real Madrid duo, Ramos and Modric

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane wants to see Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric get their new contract as soon as possible which will make the duo stay at the club for some more years.

Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric, both are the key members of Zinedine Zidane’s squad. Their presence in the game and experience is always fruitful for Real Madrid. Their contract will end in 2021 with Real Madrid. They are now allowed to sign a pre-contract with any club. But Zidane wants to make them stay and asked the Real Madrid board to solve the matter soon.

Before the game against Celta Vigo, Zidane told the press, “I want the contractual situations of our players sorted out as soon as possible.”

“It is in the best interests of everyone.”

“For myself, I’m lucky to be Madrid’s coach. I can’t say how long I’ll be here.”

“We already have a large squad and have more than enough for our game this weekend. There’s nothing more to say.”- he added.

Top 5 Defenders in the NBA 2020-21 season

A defensive player is often overlooked. What many don’t realise is defence is as important, if not more, as offence. To prevent the opponent from scoring is a skill which is difficult to master.

5. Patrick Beverly – Los Angeles Clippers

2019-2020 Statistics: 7.9 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.1 SPG

There is no denying that Patrick Beverly will fight tooth and nail for his team, every second he is on the court. Beverly is one of the best defensive guards in the league at the moment. He is a 3-time All-Defensive player who has been causing a problem for top offensive players in the league for quite some time now. His defensive abilities can help the Clippers in stopping and beating many teams this season. He could potentially be a part of an All-Defensive team this year.

Kawhi is a 2-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, 6-time All-Defensive player and the 2014-2015 Steal Champion. His size is the reason why he can guard any position.

He won his first championship last year, one of the reasons for Lakers’ success was Davis’ defensive capabilities.

2. Rudy Gobert – Utah Jazz

2019-2020 Statistics: 15.1 PPG, 13.5 RPG, 1.5 APG, 2.0 BPG

Rudy Gobert ranks 1 in the whole league for Defensive Rating per minute. He has 69.3% of his team’s blocks while on the court, the best in the league. Rudy Gobert is a 4-time All-Defensive player, the 2016-2017 Block Champion and a 2-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He has a reputation and giving himself the name of being the best defender in the league. Scoring against him is a nightmare for many in the league. His defensive abilities also help him pick up many offensive rebounds (3.4 last season), which helps to create more opportunities for his team.

1. Giannis Antetokounmpo – Milwaukee Bucks

2019-2020 Statistics: 29.5 PPG, 13.6 RPG, 5.6 APG, 1.0 SPG, 1.0 BPG

Giannis Antetokounmpo is not only the reigning NBA MVP but also is the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Antetokounmpo is 1 of only 5 players in NBA history to have won both – MVP and DPOY – in the same year. There is no denying Giannis’ presence on the floor, whether it’s on the offensive side or defensive side. Giannis is a 3-time All-Defensive player. He hasn’t been able to take the Bucks to the success people hoped for them, but Giannis did sign a supermax 5-year contract worth $228 million, which gives the Bucks the hope that he might lead them to the success what they envisioned.

Other than these tough defensive players, players like Marcus Smart, Jrue Holiday and Draymond Green do deserve a mention on this list.

An update on Mesut Ozil’s future

Mesut Ozil was quite shockingly left out of the 20/21 Premier League squad for Mikel Arteta’s first full campaign, and there have been rumours regarding the German’s departure ever since.

One of the rumours linked Ozil with Juventus, who already have an abundance of exciting talents in midfield with the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Arthur, Aaron Ramsey and Weston Mckennie all battling it out for minutes on the pitch.

Those rumours were squashed by Fabrizio Romano on his Here We Go podcast on Patreon as he mentioned that the Bianconeri were not in contact with Ozil, nor his agent.

The Italian transfer guru went on to say that a possible move to MLS could be on the cards for the playmaker if any American club officially submits a bid to sign him. A possible transfer to Turkey can also happen since the league has a reputation for being the destination in case of many ageing players.

Ozil’s agent is still working to find a solution for the problem, according to Romano. Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has been unclear regarding Ozil’s future at the club while talking about the player. Here is what the Arsenal boss had to say:

“We will see what happens in the transfer window and we will assess that at the end,” Arteta said.

“You have to respect the player’s contract,” he continued.

“What you can do is try to be open with them and tell them your intentions, the role they have in the team and why that is.

“At the end, they are entitled to make the decision in their lives because they have a contract here.

“Some would like to move because they are not playing, and some would like to stay.

“At the end that is something we cannot decide.”

Ozil has been very clear about his love for the club and the fact that he would stay if he had the choice. However, the Gunners are still trying to offload their number 10, as well as his £350,000 wages from their books.

Barcelona reach total agreement with Eric Garcia regarding a pre-contract

0

Manchester City centre-back Eric Garcia has been on the radar of his former club, Barcelona, for quite some time now. The arrival of Ruben Dias and the resurgence of John Stones’ form, along with Aymeric Laporte’s consistency has pushed the youngster way back in the line for minutes on the pitch.

According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Catalonians have reached total agreement with their former player regarding a return to Camp Nou in the summer. The official decision of the player is yet to be announced.

Garcia is set to be a Barcelona player at the end of the season for sure. However, due to the current situation of personnel at Ronald Koeman’s squad, they might have to negotiate beforehand since Gerard Pique is effectively ruled out for the season, and the packed fixture schedule could cause more injuries in the games to come.

Barcelona tried to sign their former player back in the summer, bidding €10 million for his services, with one year left on his contract with the Premier League club. However, City rejected Barcelona’s advance and now will have to let him go for free if the buyers don’t submit another bid in the ongoing transfer window.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City made plenty of attempts to try and convince Garcia to stay, but the player was always keen on heading back to Camp Nou.

Pep Guardiola wants Eric Garcia and is confident that Barcelona cannot snatch him

Romano also mentioned that the pre-contract agreement would have to wait till Barcelona have a new President, which will be at the end of this month. The deal is set to be successful for sure, unless the new president has other plans for the future.

All the minor and major details of Garcia’s return to Barcelona have been agreed between the two parties, and it is only a matter of time before we see the Spaniard don a Barcelona shirt again.

Samsung Galaxy S21 might come without a MicroSD slot: Reason

Samsung, the South Korean manufacturer, is one of the biggest smartphone OEM in the world currently. One of their new devices, Samsung Galaxy S21, is scheduled to launch after just two weeks. In the recent few days, you must have come across a few leaks telling something or other about the smartphone to you. We have another such news before the official unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S21.

With every new launch, customers want the companies to work more on their smartphones and put on better features. But, to everyone’s surprise, Samsung might just remove one of the key aspects of the smartphone in this upcoming device. According to the reports, Samsung may not include the MicroSD slot which is present to expand the storage capability. A similar kind of news came a day before but this time it is the industry authority, Roland Quandt, who had tweeted to confirm the rumors. You can find the tweet below.

A point to note is that Samsung has taken this step previously as well. In 2015, all of its premium models came without the MicroSD slot. In 2019 and 2020, some of the models of Samsung came without this external storage option. These changes do not affect customers’ sentiments. Samsung’s revenue has been on a constant rise for a few years. Their bottom-line or profits has also increased but fell last year. Though, that was expected due to the ill-effects of the pandemic.

Though this news is yet to confirmed by Samsung officially. Thus, we cannot approve this news but often these leaks prove out to be true which makes us believe that Samsung Galaxy S21 might come up without a MicroSD slot. Anyways, all these rumors will be rested soon as the official launch of the smartphone is just a fortnight away.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 5000 series to have 16-core option?

0

AMD is all set to make many announcements at the CES 2021, which is a week apart from now. Now a new rumour has come up that AMD might introduce us with a 16-core Threadripper 5000 processor.

This is quite unusual as AMD’s monstrous 16-core Ryzen 5950X is already there, however, according to other rumours, the Threadripper 5000 series might also have a different codename: “Chagall”. So, as Genesis Peak might refer to the platform itself, Chagall could directly relate to the Threadripper series.

In fact, according to another theory, the Genesis could be the codename for the ‘entry-level’ EPYC chip that might feature 16-core SKUs. Yuri has explicitly told Videocardz that his ‘leak’ covers Threadripper as the original information also mentions the sTRX socket.

So, if do a 16-core Threadripper 5000 CPU exist then it will be named Ryzen Threadripper 5960X most probably, as Threadripper naming pattern continues from where it started by Ryzen SKUs. The main difference between the two could be the Threadripper advantages like quad-memory support and more PCIe lanes being available to the CPU.

Obviously, you won’t have to wait long to get the truth uncovered as AMD will likely announce the Ryzen Threadripper 5000 series in a few days at CES Keynote by Dr Lisa Su. Seeing the amazing Zen 3 architecture on Ryzen 5000, the expections for next-gen Threadripper is indeed very exciting.
