TikTok publishes rare insight into UK Business with $119 million loss

0

Chinese video-sharing social networking service TikTok has recorded a $119.5 million loss over 2019 in its U.K. business, driven by costs attributing to advertising and marketing, providing a rare insight into how quickly the app is expanding.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance Ltd., has not provided information about global revenue figures, but according to the latest company filings made this week, U.K. sales amounted to $20 million over 2019. Expenses related to sales and marketing came to $109 million over the year. The unit hadn’t begun posting revenue in 2018.

According to Bloomberg, “ByteDance is said to have generated over $3 billion of profit on more than $17 billion of revenue in 2019.” Also, the startup tracker has reported that ByteDance is already worth $140 billion.

Among the teenagers, TikTok has shot to fame globally and has made quite the name for itself over a few years. Its influence has also attracted outrage from the Trump administration, which argues that the app’s Chinese ownership brings about a national security threat.

TikTok had just a handful of staff in the U.K by the end of the year 2018. The social networking app has since been rapidly expanding, hiring hundreds of employees from rival companies. It has also planned on making London its international headquarters. However, no confirmed decision has been made by the company.

“As of today, the TikTok community numbers over 100 million people across the U.K. and Europe, and we’re excited about our future growth potential,” said a TikTok spokesman, according to Bloomberg. “These results reflect an early period of development and investment for TikTok in the U.K., and should be taken in that context.”

Uncertainty lies within the future of TikTok’s global business. In mid-September, a preliminary plan was approved by the U.S. President Donald Trump in which ByteDance would sell part of TikTok to Walmart Inc, Oracle Corp., and U.S. investment firms Sequoia Capital, KKR & Co., and General Atlantic, giving rise to a new independent company called TikTok Global. For months that deal has been stuck in limbo.

The U.K. filing said “a number of strategic options are being considered in connection with the future operational structure of TikTok global business,” but added that the U.K. business would not face any direct impact due to the changes.

Digital Extremes is now acquired by Tencent

0

Tencent has obtained Leyou Technologies which was a $1.5 billion deal. That means this Chinese company now owns most of the games you know about. This deal was previously hinted at in early 2020. It was then reported that Sony was also interested in the deal, but finally, on December 11, it was signed-off by Leyou shareholders.

Do you know that Leyou was a chicken processing company in the past? From 2014 the company started its journey into videogames by gaining a majority stake in Digital Extremes, the Canadian developer. The company created Athlon games, which now works with Amazon as a publisher partner on the Lord of the Rings MMO.

Richard Jolly, the Splash Damage co-founder and CEO said, “We’ve always been dedicated to creating team-based games that spark friendships and build passionate communities, and we strive to work with partners who believe in that mission. In our many discussions with Tencent, it became clear that they not only believe in that mission but will do everything they can to enable and empower us to realise it. This is going to be a bold new phase for our studio, with an amazing line-up of ambitious games that deliver on what Splash Damage is all about. We couldn’t be more excited.”

Digital Extremes was always dedicated to their deal with Leyou confirmed the creative independence of the studio. The studio’s blogpost asks whether Warframe will continue to be developed in this way:

“Yes, we will continue to create great content for Warframe, and we will remain creatively independent. Our focus will remain on listening to you, our community, upgrading Warframe based on your feedback, and developing the kind of great stories, gameplay, and incredible new space ninja action you’ve come to expect from us. Tencent is well known for respecting the creative decisions and integrity of its studios, and for giving them the autonomy and independence to experiment, innovate and thrive.”

Many companies like Epic has responded in the past that Tencent is always an overbearing partner. Now the company’s holdings are too wide and deep that it can attract the US Government. With the massive growth, it seems unstoppable now.

Xiaomi Mi 11 to offer +16% memory speed boost with “full-blood” LPDDR5 RAM never seen before

Xiaomi Mi 11 series will be hitting the market on 28th December 2020 in China. Reports suggest that the smartphone will be present in two variants: 8 GB RAM & 128 GB storage and 12 GB RAM & 256 GB storage. The major news coming just before the launch is that Mi 11 will be coming with a massive +16% memory speed boost.

This new series of Xiaomi is heavily talked about in the market. People are looking forward to the arrival of this smartphone as it is already stuffed with many high-end components. The smartphone will be powered by the most awaited Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 system-on-a-chip (SoC).

The latest premium device will comprise LPDDR5 RAM, but this RAM will be very different from what is already present in the Xiaomi Mi 10. According to the reports, Mi 11 gets faster “full-blood” LPDDR5. To explain this major difference, the Chinese OEM has posted a graph which is shown below.

Here, we can see LPDDR5 at 5,500 Mb/s in 2020. And the variant of LPDDR5 which is present in Mi 11 can go a notch above. It offers a 16% performance increase with the aid of 6,400 Mb/s speed. That’s an increase of almost 1000 Mb/s speed! This gives users of new Mi 11 a completely different experience. Faster RAM supports them as the smartphone can perform faster. As the smartphone performs quicker, the customers will be operating smoothly from one application to another and perform other tasks faster.

So now, we have two important and path-breaking features associated with Xiaomi’s Mi 11. The first is the Snapdragon 888 SoC as it will be the first smartphone launched in the market with Qualcomm’s new chipset. Secondly, the “full-blood” LPDDR5 RAM which we are talking about here. Let’s set our calendar dates to 28th December quickly!

Asus revealed its new WiFi 6 router

0

With the advancement of technology demand for high-performing gadgets in the market has risen. As such the tech companies are competing with each other to deliver outstanding models to satisfy user demands and improve their market value.

ASUS introduced its RT-AX68U WiFi 6 router, and the gadget offers Dual Band WiFi 6 with a maximum wireless transmission rate of up to 2700 MB per second. It supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio bands.

According to sources, the RT-AX68U router supports both the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz radio bands. it will allow devices to have a stable connection to the router. Asus has designed the router to offer WiFi 6, which can increase WiFi signal and better coverage of up to 80% compared to previous WiFi iterations.

The design of the RT-AX68U router is considerably different, and this router features a vertical design. The new design minimizes the footprint of this router, allowing for more space on your desk. This smaller footprint is perfect for a home office.

The device features ASUS’s Ai Mesh and Ai Protection, and Ai Mesh allows users to create a mesh WiFi using any other ASUS router that also offers support for Ai Mesh. Ai Protection has a web filter that, when enabled, adds a layer of web filtering above the router’s firewall.

Asus’ Ai Mesh technology allows for much wider coverage by using another ASUS router to an anchor. For now, the official price details are not revealed, but sources indicate that Asus is targeting a sub-$100 price point.

MediaTek overtakes Qualcomm to lead the Smartphone Chipset Market for the First Time

0

Taiwanese chipset maker MediaTek has surpassed Qualcomm and become the biggest smartphone chipset vendor in Q3 of 2020 with a 31% market share as smartphone sales rebounded in the quarter, according to Counterpoint estimates. After strong performance in the budget ($100-250) segment in markets like China and India helped it become the biggest smartphone chipset vendor.

The report shows that MediaTek chipsets powered over 100 million smartphones sold globally during Q3 2020. The Taiwanese company’s market share rose to 31% from 26% a year ago. On the other hand, Qualcomm’s market share fell from 31% to 29% YoY.

In the Indian market, MediaTek’s chipset share grew to 46% from 35% a year ago while Qualcomm took another fall to 38% from 42% during the same time period.

Among rivals, Apple’s chipset market share showed a slight growth to 12% from 11% a year ago, while that of Samsung’s Exynos chipset took a fall from 16% to 12% year on year (YoY) in the quarter.

Image: CounterPoint Research

Meanwhile, Qualcomm took the top spot as the 5G chipset vendor in Q3 2020 after powering 39% of the 5G phones sold worldwide. With 17% of all smartphones sold in Q3 2020 being 5G, the demand for 5G smartphones doubled up in Q3 2020 and is likely to continue the impressive growth trajectory. 5G enabled smartphones are expected to occupy one-third of all smartphones shipped in Q4 2020, which poses a chance for Qualcomm to regain the top position in Q4 2020.

Commenting on MediaTek’s market share gain, Research Director of Counterpoint, Dale Gai said, “MediaTek’s strong market share gain in Q3 2020 happened due to three reasons – strong performance in the mid-end smartphone price segment ($100-$250) and emerging markets like LATAM and MEA, the US ban on Huawei and finally wins in leading OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi and Honor. The share of MediaTek chipsets in Xiaomi has increased more than three times since the same period last year. MediaTek was also able to leverage the gap created due to the US ban on Huawei. Affordable MediaTek chips fabricated by TSMC became the first option for many OEMs to fill the gap left by Huawei’s absence quickly. Huawei had also previously purchased a significant amount of chipsets ahead of the ban.”

Gai added, “On the other hand, Qualcomm also posted strong share gains (from a year ago) in the high-end segment in Q3 2020, again thanks to HiSilicon’s supply issues. However, Qualcomm faced competition from MediaTek in the mid-end segment. We believe both will continue to compete intensively through aggressive pricing, and mainstream 5G SoC products into 2021.”
