Microsoft testing its new Auto HDR for nearly 1000 PC games

According to recent sources, the Redmond-based giant, Microsoft, is planning to automatically add HDR support to more than 1,000 PC games. It is now testing a new Auto HDR feature on Windows 10, which works just like it does on the latest Xbox Series S and X consoles.

The new feature will add a high dynamic range (HDR) to a large number of DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games, as long as you have a compatible HDR monitor.

“While some game studios develop for HDR gaming PCs by mastering their game natively for HDR, Auto HDR for PC will take DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 SDR-only games and intelligently expand the color/brightness range up to HDR. It’s a seamless platform feature that will give you an amazing new gaming experience that takes full advantage of your HDR monitor’s capabilities.”

According to sources, the Auto HDR can be enabled in the latest Windows 10 test build (21337), and it should be automatically enabled or can be toggled in the display part of settings.  For now, the Auto HDR feature is just in a preview state, and not all top DirectX 11 / 12 games will support it.

The windows maker stated that it is also working to optimize performance and fix some issues, and the company admits “Auto HDR does take some GPU compute power to implement.”

Alongside the Auto HDR feature, improvements to Virtual Desktops, a File Explorer layout update, and even some changes to built-in apps like Notepad, are being brought to the Windows platform with the latest update.

Sources indicate that Windows 10 will soon include custom backgrounds for each Virtual Desktop, with the ability to easily reorder desktops. Windows 10 will also be updated to include Windows Terminal and Power Automate Desktop

Samsung and TSMC leads the chip manufacturing race with huge capital investments

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics are the two biggest rivals in manufacturing chip process nodes. And according to the latest information, both are on their way to allocate historic levels of capital expenditure in their processes.

It is estimated that both the rivals will spend a combined $55 billion on facilities and equipment to print semiconductors. But, it’s not just the fab manufacturers, Governments in the U.S., EU, and China need to spend around $150 billion spread out over the next five years if they have any hope of developing an indigenous industry capable of matching the Asian giants manufacturing prowess.

Samsung spent around $28.1 billion in foundry capital expenditure last year, and the company will maintain this spending level in 2021. According to sources, TSMC revealed spending between $25 billion – $28 billion in capital expenditure.

Intel is pretty far, in the investment game, as it spent around $14.3 billion in 2020.

In 2020, we encountered a defect mode in the development of our 7nm process technology that resulted in yield degradation, which was the primary driver for a delay in our expectations for our 7nm-based CPU product timing. These delays can allow competitors to benefit from advancements in manufacturing processes introduced ahead of us by third-party foundries and could adversely affect the competitiveness of our products. — Intel

But according to Analysts, the $150 billion figure quoted above is the bare minimum for governments if they want to stay competitive in the chip manufacturing space. The U.S. has allocated up to $3 billion for individual projects to increase American chip manufacturing capacity.

In China, sources indicate that it can’t catch up to either TSMC or Samsung even if it does spend $150 billion. This is due to export control regulations limiting the country’s ability to procure key manufacturing equipment.

Qualcomm to develop Snapdragon 7c Successor, may power mid-range Laptops: Reports

0

After last week’s news of a new flagship chipset that made waves across the industry, Qualcomm is reportedly in the process of developing a Snapdragon 7c successor. This successor will be a mid-range Arm-based PC chipset to support cheaper hardware. According to a report by WinFuture, the likely addition to the series bears the internal model number SC7295.

Android Authority states that “the publication believes the silicon is a variant of the Snapdragon 775 chip for smartphones set to power the yet-to-be-released Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite.” Leaked specs of Snapdragon 775 indicate a 5nm manufacturing process, LPDDR5 RAM support, and mmWave 5G support.

As for hardware details of the chip, it does not adopt the same all-performance core layout as the previously rumored successor of Snapdragon 8cx. Eight cores in total are featured in the chipset, with four pulling low-power processing duties clocked at 1.8GHz. Clocked at 2.7GHz, one pure performance core also exists. The remaining three cores clock in at speeds of 2.4GHz.

About the layout, Android Authority reports, “that layout is still a departure from the original Snapdragon 7c. It sported two performance Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and another six Cortex-A55 cores.” The new chipset is expected to offer considerably more processing power than its predecessor.

Testing hardware has found no mention, therefore, we know little about the devices Qualcomm is hoping to power. However, the American chipmaker is likely to have to adapt to Microsoft and its Windows releases, among others, with its product planning. There are still a limited number of devices with a combination of Windows and Qualcomm CPUs. This might be because the performance has often not yet reached the expected level. The chip giant is therefore increasingly dependent on Google and its Chromebook partners to be the customers for the ARM chips for notebooks.

Intel’s Xe-HPG DG2 GPU spotted on Geekbench with 12.6 GB VRAM

Intel’s upcoming flagship Xe-HPG DG2 Gaming GPU has made an appearance within the Geekbench database along with its specifications. The Xe-HPG lineup from Intel will be dedicated to gaming graphics cards and will be available by the 2nd half of 2021.

The GPU features 512 Execution units that round up to 4096 cores. The clock speed was maintained at 1800 MHz (max) but this might not be the final clock speed as the graphics card tested on Geekbench is still in an engineering state.

In the listings, we find that the card has a 12.6 GB memory capacity, but it seems like the benchmark is unable to properly identify the VRAM capacity and could just be 12 GB in total. The GPU also packs 4 MB of L2 cache.

To conduct the test, an Intel Alder Lake-S Desktop CPU platform which comprised of a 12th Gen processor featuring 16 cores and 24 threads was used, which is surprising. The Alder Lake-S Desktop CPU is clocked at 2.20 GHz base and 4.60 GHz boost clocks and is comprised of 32 GB DDR5 memory.

Coming to the OpenCL test result, the Intel Xe-HPG DG2 GPU is really bad and performs worse than even the GeForce 500 series graphics. But the reason for that is the tested unit was one of the first produced units, and also currently there are no optimized drivers available. Once every supporting module has been produced the performance of the flagship GPU would end up being on par with current modern-day graphics cards.

If the listing is to be believed then we can see the 512 EU GPUs in both 12 GB (192-bit) and 16 GB (256-bit) flavors. As for the variants, we only know so far that a full die with 4096 cores, 256-bit bus interface, and up to 16 GB GDDR6 memory has been listed to be created by Intel. For now, it seems that the blue team will produce more variants once it gets adequate demands from its buyers.

When you log in for the first time after the update, you will be greeted with the impressive season 6 trailer and the Zero Point event. Season 5 was concluded with “Zero Crisis Finale,” and now season 6 begins from there with a new prehistoric biome to the island.

Below, you can check out the cinematic video of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 6 which describes the adventure where you will help Agent Jonesy to save reality.

Now you will find a towering spire exactly in the center of the island, right where the zero point explosion took place in season 5, which is surrounded by a village and several new locations, which has replaced the alien desert from the last season.

The most interesting thing is that, from now, animals will roam around the island, including everything from harmless ones like chicken and frogs to the deadly wild boar and wolves. Also, they have included a new crafting mechanic by which players will be able to build makeshift weapons like new from the hunted wildlife and discarded technology.

Strasbourg defender Mohamed Simakan is close to joining RB Leipzig, according to Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go podcast along with Francesco Porzio. The Italian duo commented on how Leipzig always look for new young talent. Notable examples of such players include Dominik Szoboszlai, Dayot Upamecano, Timo Werner and Marcel Sabitzer.

The German club will have to pay a fee worth around €15-20 million for the French centre-back. Interestingly, Chelsea’s transfer plans for the summer could be affected should Leipzig complete the signing of Simakan in the summer. This is because Simakan was on the list of Chelsea.

Originally, the player was a target for Milan but now that he is joining Leipzig, the Serie A outfit have one name out of the list. Meanwhile, Chelsea loanee Fikayo Tomori is impressing at the San Siro. Milan have the option of making the move permanent for €28 mill, and they will decide at the end of the season. All that said, there are a lot of positive feelings about Tomori’s current situation at Milan.

After the deal with Sabadell Bank was announced yesterday, Joan Laporta has been officially sworn in for his second distinct term as Barcelona president. The newly re-elected president indeed produced the €125 million required for him to be sworn in.

Laporta took the opportunity to talk about Messi and how he intends in trying to make the player stay:

“I will do everything I can to try to convince Leo to stay. He knows this.

“We will try everything because he is the best player in history and forgive me for saying this to you in front of everyone here, but you know how much I love you and how much we want you to stay.”

Fabrizio Romano and Francesco Porzio further outlined the situation in place at Barcelona on the Here We Go podcast, outlying that the meeting between Lionel Messi and Joan Laporta regarding his future at the club will take place at the end of the season.

Manchester United will be winning the Premier League in the future, shows a study by CIES Football Observatory

The CIES Football Observatory released its squad reports for the month of March, grading clubs across Europe on three factors: age structure, group stability and contractual policy.

According to the findings of the study, Manchester United possess the most sustainable squad across all of Europe’s top five leagues. The Premier League club has also been tipped to be one of the favourites to win the league in the years to come. As for the ongoing season, the finding has predicted that Manchester United should make it to the Champions League next season without too much hassle.

Coming to the details of the study, they take a cut-off age for each position – 33 for a goalkeeper, 32 for a defender, 31 for a midfielder and 30 for a striker – before measuring what percentage of minutes players above those ages have played for teams this season.

The second test is group stability, looking at the reliance on new signings, and how many minutes are played by recruits since June 2020. Top of the list across the whole of Europe is Fulham, while Manchester United are sat in the bottom 10, having relied little on new signings, breathing continuity through the squad – a desirable attribute according to the study.

Finally, they studied the minutes played by players who are on loan, or whose contracts are set to expire before June 2022.

Manchester United lead the list, while Basque clubs Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao come in second and third respectively. The top five is capped off by Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in fourth and fifth respectively.
