UEFA Champions League 22/23 results 6th Sept: Zagreb shock Chelsea; PSG defeat Juventus and more

0

The 22/23 Champions League went underway with the group stage fixtures being played out to a conclusion for a number of teams. Here is what went down on September 6, the first night of matchday 1.

UEFA Champions League 22/23 results

  • Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 Chelsea
  • Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Copenhagen
  • PSG 2-1 Juventus
  • RB Salzburg 1-1 AC Milan
  • Sevilla 0-4 Manchester City
  • RB Leipzig 1-4 Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Celtic 0-3 Real Madrid
  • Benfica 2-0 Maccabi Haifa

Chelsea stunned in Croatia

Dinamo Zagreb are unbeaten across the league and Europe, and were able to get the better of the 2021 Champions League winners in front of a loud home crowd. Mislav Orsic gave his side the lead in the 13th minute, following a solo goal on the counter.

Chelsea’s performance across both halves was nothing short of shambolic, with Thomas Tuchel’s side struggling to play passes accurately. Kepa Arrizabalaga got a rare start between the sticks, and did quite well with his opportunity. The Spaniard was the only silver lining in an embarrassing night for the Blues.

Haaland and Mbappe score a brace

The rivalry seems to be on the verge of breaking out, with both young strikers scoring a brace on the opening day of the Champions League. Mbappe scored twice early in the game to give PSG their first three points. Haaland scored a poacher’s finish on either side of half time to make short work of Sevilla.

Incredible scenes from Shakhtar

The Ukrainian side haven’t played in over six months and won’t host games in their home country due to the war. They have had to sell off a majority of their foreign players, but still pulled off a miraculous win against Leipzig in Germany.

Sri Lanka defeated India by 6 wickets in the Asian Cup super four, potentially ending India’s chances of making it to the finals. After being asked to bat, they were able to set a target of 174 following their 20 overs. But, Sri Lanka chased down the total by the finest of margins and continued their resurgence in the continental tournament.

Sri Lanka needed seven runs off of the last six, which set up another tense finish for the men in blue. But although Arshdeep Singh bowled a tight final over, he was unable to restrict the opponents and get the much needed win.

India lose to Sri Lanka in second consecutive defeat in Asian Cup

Indian captain Rohit Sharma scored 72 runs off of 41 balls and was the top scorer for them. He was backed up by Suryakumar Yadav, who hit 34 runs to set up the target.

India have fallen in defeat to two of their rivals in their last two games. And if this is indeed the end for them, then there is a lot of work to be done. Despite setting up relatively high targets, their bowling and fielding attack was unable to perform at the level needed to get the wins.

The men in blue will face Afganistan in their next game, while Sri Lanka face off against Pakistan in a replay of the 2014 final.
