Manchester United’s business over the last 10 years shows massive overspending

Manchester United’s transfer business over the last ten years has been spotty to say the least. And data from the CIES Football Observatory shows that they paid €238 million more for 33 players over the course of the last ten years. 

The Red Devils have had to deal with several players that couldn’t live up to the hype. The likes of Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Harry Maguire all come to mind when considering the category. 

Manchester United’s overspending showcased by stats 

The biggest signing of the summer for the Premier League side was Antony. The Brazilian joined for €95 million plus €5 million in add-ons, which is €33 million over his €67 million price tag. For Casemiro, who joined in a deal close to €80 million, the excess amounted to €26 million. 

And in the case of Lisandro Martinez, the additional amount was €29 million. The Argentinian has performed well during his last few games, and is showing great potential despite a lot of criticism about his stature. 

Interestingly, the best business that Manchester United did over the time period of data accumulation was that of Paul Pogba. The France international joined from Juventus for €110 million, when his market value was around €136 million. However, his time at Old Trafford didn’t exactly go smoothly and he is now back at Juventus, joining them for free.

UEFA are planning to hold a mini tournament at the beginning of every season, with four participating teams. Right now, it is being called the ‘Opening Tournament’, and will see some of the best teams in Europe square off against one another. 

One of the confirmed participants are the previous season’s Champions League winners. Which means that if it were to be held prior to the beginning of the ongoing 22/23 season, Real Madrid would’ve been an automatic qualifier. 

UEFA planning 4-team pre-season mini tournament 

The Champions League format has been criticised a lot in recent years. And not too long ago, Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid led a movement for the European Super League as an alternative. However, due to strong protests from fans, the plans were eventually shut down. 

The presidents of all three clubs have still hinted that talks about such a breakaway competition could be on. Which means that the ‘Opening Tournament‘ could be one of the ways in which UEFA changes their approach to European football whilst governing all the teams. They have also changed the format of the Champions League to reflect one similar to that of the European Super League, in the coming years.  

UEFA are considering plans of playing the tournament outside of Europe, with the Middle East, North America or SouthEast Asia emerging as lucrative destinations.

Christoph Freund will be staying at RB Salzburg despite interest from Chelsea. The sporting director was expected to have reached an agreement with the Premier League side to become their new sporting director. 

However, a U-turn in the last 24 hours has seen both Freund and RB Salzburg put out statements confirming that he will be going nowhere. 

Christoph Freund to stay at RB Salzburg 

“As I have already confirmed in interviews, Chelsea FC was interested in me. When such a big club asks, it not only honors me and the work of FC Red Bull Salzburg, it is of course also a circumstance that entails personal considerations. But I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m in the best of hands with FC Red Bull Salzburg and that a change is out of the question for me,” Christoph Freund told RB Salzburg. 

“We’re in the middle of a very intense phase and have important tasks to do in the Bundesliga, Cup and Champions League – that’s what my focus and concentration are on.” 

Chelsea have had other names on their list, and are moving on in their quest to recruit a new sporting director. Michael Edwards and Oliver Mintzlaff have not been persuaded, and others will now be contacted over the job.

The Deutsche Fußball Liga has signed an agreement with Football Sports Development Limited, organiser of the Indian Super League, to share best practices in areas including fan engagement, marketing and technology. One area of work will be developing the structure and commercial model for the ISL’s esports competition the eISL.

The FDSL is the organizer of the Indian Super League (ISL) and is the commercial partner of Indian football. The MoU primarily aims at improving the football practice sessions in India and enables the two countries to learn from their diverse sporting cultures.

The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga, organising body of Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the commercial partner of Indian football and organiser of the Indian Super League. The first knowledge-sharing workshop took place in Frankfurt, Germany.

Speaking about the MoU and the agreement, DFL CEO Donata Hopfen has said that the agreement would help in the ‘growth’ of global football. He also said “India represents an exciting emerging market thanks to the already rapidly-expanding interest in football and the active participation among society in recent years, making football the second largest sport within the country. Therefore, and due to its world-renowned passion for sports, India already plays – and will continue to play – a significant role in the context of the Bundesliga’s international efforts in the years to come. Jointly exploring avenues of collaboration and working closely with the ISL our trusted partner will not only benefit Indian and German professional football, but more importantly will be another important step as we support the growth of the world’s favourite sport globally.”
