Fierce global competition

The list of the world’s most admired companies is created by Fortune, a US business magazine, and Korn Ferry, a global organizational consulting firm. Initially, a selection of 1,500 companies is made and then finalists are chosen based on industry.

Next, senior company executives, directors, and securities analysts are asked to rate the enterprises in their own industry based on nine criteria, including investment value, quality of management and products, social responsibility, and ability to attract talent. Companies must score in the top 50% of their industry to be included in the list.

Intel announces pay cuts for its employees and executives amidst low PC market demand

0

Intel Corp announced broad pay cuts for employees and executives on Tuesday, a week after the company issued a lower-than-expected sales forecast due to a loss of market share to rivals and a PC market downturn.

The reductions will range from 5% of base pay for mid-level employees to as much as 25% for Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger, according to a person familiar with the matter who was not authorised to speak publicly.

Intel spokesperson Addy Burr said in a statement that the “changes are designed to impact our executive population more significantly and will help support the investments and overall workforce.”

Last week, Intel announced that its profit margins were falling as the PC market cools after several years of growth during the pandemic.

Gelsinger also admitted that Intel has “stumbled” and lost market share to competitors such as Advanced Micro Devices Inc, which reported quarterly sales that exceeded Wall Street’s expectations on Tuesday.

According to a source familiar with Intel’s pay cuts, in addition to 5% reductions for mid-level employees, vice president level employees will face 10% reductions, and the company’s top executives other than the CEO will face 15% reductions.

According to the person, the company has also reduced its 401(k) matching programme from 5% to 2.5% and suspended merit raises and quarterly performance bonuses.

AMD Radeon 780M iGPU appears in new Benchmarks

0

Golden Pig Upgrade has published the first performance benchmarks for AMD’s upcoming RDNA 3 integrated GPU, the Radeon 780M. When it is released, the AMD Radeon 780M will be the fastest integrated GPU, leveraging the brand-new RDNA 3 GPU architecture. The Radeon 780M and Radeon 760M will be the first two models in the RDNA 3 iGPU lineup.

The Radeon 780M will have 12 Compute Units and 768 SPs, with a clock speed of up to 3 GHz, while the Radeon 760M will have 8 Compute Units and 512 SPs, with a clock speed of up to 2.8 GHz.

These iGPUs will be equipped with AMD’s Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” APUs, which have a TDP of 35-45 Watts.

Furthermore, when the laptops hit the market in March of this year, these chips are expected to retain all of their Radeon-exclusive features such as raytracing, FSR, RSR, and other tech support.

Golden Pig Upgrade, a well-known Bilibili tech creator, has published the first performance figures for the AMD Radeon 780M integrated graphics. Three different configurations of 3DMark Time Spy were used to run the graphics benchmarks. Both configurations used LPDDR5X memory, but the first used LPDDR5X-7500 and the second DDR5-5600. Given that APUs are heavily reliant on memory bandwidth, the LPDDR5X solution undoubtedly provides the best performance results.

The AMD Radeon 780M RDNA 3 GPU scored around 3000 points with LPDDR5X memory, while the DDR5 solution scored around 2750 points in 3DMark Time Spy graphics. This represents a 26% improvement over its predecessor, the Radeon 680M RDNA 2 GPU. The GPU easily outperforms last-generation popular laptop GPUs like the GTX 1050 Ti and even comes close to the RTX 2050 laptop GPU.

OpenAI launches tool to detect AI generated Text

0

OpenAI, the maker of the popular chatbot ChatGPT, announced the release of a software tool to identify text generated by artificial intelligence in a blog post on Wednesday. ChatGPT is a free programme that generates text in response to a prompt, such as articles, essays, jokes, and even poetry, and it has gained widespread popularity since its release in November, despite concerns about copyright and plagiarism.

The AI classifier, a language model trained on a dataset of pairs of human-written and AI-written text on the same topic, aims to differentiate AI-written text from human-written text.

According OpenAI, it uses a variety of providers to address issues such as automated misinformation campaigns and academic dishonesty.

In its public beta mode, OpenAI admits that the detection tool is unreliable on texts of less than 1,000 characters, and that AI-written text can be edited to fool the classifier.

Since ChatGPT launched in November and gained widespread popularity among millions of users, some of the largest school districts in the United States, including New York City, have banned the AI chatbot due to concerns that students will use the text generator to cheat or plagiarise.

Others, such as GPTZeroX, have developed third-party detection tools to assist educators in detecting AI-generated text. OpenAI stated that it is working with educators to discuss ChatGPT’s capabilities and limitations, and that it will continue to work on AI-generated text detection.

Intel slashes its Alder Lake CPU prices by 20%

0

According to Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, citing industry sources, Intel is in talks with specific PC vendors to reduce Alder Lake prices by up to 20%, a move that comes after Intel increased CPU prices in Q4 2022.

Intel, like most technology companies, is feeling the effects of a volatile economy that has seen consumer demand for expansive products plummet. The company recently reported massive quarterly losses, reduced employee wages and bonuses, and cancelled R&D expansion plans.

Intel is struggling to move large amounts of inventory at a time when customers are reducing their stock levels as consumer demand declines.

Slashing the price of Alder Lake, which uses a hybrid core design, could be a good way to get rid of excess inventory. Customers who purchased the chips before the new year, according to DigiTimes, are outraged by the price drop.

Harukaze5719, a Twitter user, has created a table that shows the Alder Lake chips’ launch prices, their prices after the Q4 2022 increase, and how much they will be after the 20% reduction. Some of the more expensive models, such as the excellent Core i9-12900 series and the Core i7-12700K, will see their prices drop by more than $100.

Mason Greenwood criminal charges dropped 1 year after arrest

0

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has had the attempted rape and assault charges against him dropped. This was confirmed by the Crown Prosecution Service in a statement, discontinuing legal action against the 21-year-old.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 after charges emerged in October. The charges pressed against him also included controlling coercive behaviour, which were from the same complainant.

Mason Greenwood has charges against him dropped a year after arrest

“Criminal proceedings against a 21-year-old man in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022 have, today, been discontinued by the CPS,” the official statement from the Prosecution Service read.

And in response, Manchester United have also issued a statement saying that they will conduct their own investigation before any other comment has been made.

“Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped,” it read.

“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

There has been no timescale placed on the internal investigations that will be carried out. However, they are unlikely to take too long. United have refrained from engaging with the matter due to the criminal investigation that was going on. And now that it has been discontinued, they will conduct their own assessment of the matter to determine the circumstances around his arrest.

Whether or not we will ever see Greenwood in a Manchester United shirt again is difficult to say. The trade-off is whether United would be open to taking a risk on their PR to field someone with criminal charges against them. The player’s career has been on hold ever since the matter, as he has not been allowed to play or train with the first team.

OnePlus 11R confirmed to feature 100W SuperVOOC S charging

0

The new OnePlus 11R smartphone is incoming and will be launched as OnePlus Ace 2 in China and the 11R is in India. The new teasers of the smartphone in China have confirmed the fact it will sport OnePlus’s upcoming 100W SuperVOOC S charging which will also will be featuring in the upcoming OnePlus 11 launching on 7th February.

Interestingly, the previous OnePlus 10R we reviewed it featured 150W SuperVOOC charging support, however, why did OnePlus reduce the charging speeds? Well, most likely because most people are happy if the charging time is around half an hour and instead of marketing gimmick people need an all-rounder rather just focussing on charging and performance.

Having the same yet big 5000mAh battery, OnePlus this time is advertising on the longetivity of the battery instead of superfast charging. Though it claims to deliver 0-50% charging in just 10 minutes but interestingly claims the battery to last for 4 years and also promises Smart charging features to improve the health.

I think this is a better approach because I have seen my OnePlus 10 Pro given to me for review see deteoriating battery life with everyday usage. So, OnePlus is said to bring battery health feature this time with OnePlus 11 series to help you see how the real-time battery life health like the iPhones, a much needed feature i would say.
