BLACKPINK’s Jisoo in Boyfriend on Demand: The Backlash, the Defence!

Boyfriend on Demand dropped on Netflix on March 6, 2026 — and within hours, the conversation shifted from the show’s charming virtual-dating premise to a question that has followed Jisoo for six years: can she actually act? The internet promptly split in two, and it’s been loud ever since.

Boyfriend on Demand — Overview

What Is Boyfriend on Demand About?

The narrative follows Seo Mi-rae, played by BLACKPINK’s Jisoo — an overworked webtoon producer whose everyday routine revolves around strict deadlines. Her routine changes when she receives access to a digital dating program called Boyfriend on Demand, a simulated platform where users enter a virtual environment and meet different partners through romantic scenarios.

It’s a fresh, high-concept K-drama premise — and one that leans entirely on its lead actress to carry the emotional and comedic weight across ten episodes.

The Criticism: What Are People Actually Saying?

One of the most frequently mentioned issues has been vocal delivery. Jisoo’s distinctive nasal tone and somewhat constrained speech style make it difficult for her to naturally carry the rhythm of scenes. Her delivery of the lively dialogue typical of romantic comedies is sometimes considered awkward, and she does not fully utilize physical comedy when scenes require it. The A.V. Club

Critics have repeatedly pointed to stiffness in dialogue-heavy or emotionally intense scenes. Ready Steady Cut Some reviewers noted the surrounding cast appeared to overcompensate — a pattern that critics argue has persisted across all five of her acting projects since 2021.

The Defence: Why Fans Are Pushing Back Hard

Many supporters stepped forward to defend her, arguing the backlash feels “forced.” Many called the criticism unnecessary, noting the drama released less than 24 hours ago and it seemed unrealistic for commenters to claim they had already watched the nearly 10-hour series within just three hours. Fans also highlighted genuine emotional moments — particularly her crying scenes — where many felt she delivered real, heartfelt depth that critics were choosing to overlook.

What the Director and Jisoo Herself Said

Director Kim Jung-sik praised her dedication: “Jisoo worked very hard, adapting to different character settings and showing growth throughout the series. Audiences can see both Mirae’s development in the story and Jisoo’s growth as an actress. Effort can surpass natural talent.” DM Talkies

Jisoo addressed it directly: “Because I take on various roles, I met with the director to discuss how I could show a better side this time. I hope people will say that I met a character that fits me perfectly.” The A.V. Club

The honest truth? Some improvement is visible — and the show’s warm, comedic tone does suit her natural energy. For more K-drama reviews and Netflix updates, stay connected at TechnoSports.
