She’s already a 10-time Grammy winner, a two-time Oscar winner, and a generation-defining pop icon. Now, Billie Eilish is about to conquer Hollywood’s big screen — and her debut role couldn’t be more perfect.

Focus Features is closing a deal to back and distribute the film in the US, with Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal on board as producers. IMDb

Why This Casting Makes Perfect Sense

The semi-autobiographical story — which Eilish has long been a fan of — chronicles a young woman’s descent into mental illness amid the stifling societal expectations for women in the 1950s. Letterboxd If you know Eilish’s music — raw, introspective, unflinchingly dark — this role practically wrote itself for her.

Eilish will play lead character Esther Greenwood. IMDb And the director is no small name either: Polley won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talking in 2023, and The Bell Jar will be her first film since that win. Letterboxd

Eilish Already Proved the Doubters Wrong

Don’t underestimate her acting chops. Eilish previously appeared in the Prime Video series Swarm, co-created by Donald Glover, where she delivered a standout performance that earned her the People’s Choice Award for TV performance of the year and an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Letterboxd

Acting was always an interest for Eilish, but it was something she told Variety in 2023 she had been “reluctant to talk about” because she feared she wasn’t very good at it. IMDb Clearly, her talent disagrees.
