Bilibili Goes Global — Is YouTube’s Biggest Rival Finally Here?

China’s answer to YouTube just made its boldest move yet. Bilibili has relaunched its international app and is building an English-language website, signaling a serious push to win creators and viewers far beyond China’s borders.

What’s Changed?

The biggest tweak in Bilibili’s new app — also coming to iOS — is the removal of identity verification, which previously required overseas users to sign up with a passport or other ID document. The Android version has already launched globally, with Google Play listings showing more than five million cumulative downloads from earlier versions of the app.The company is also preparing an English-language website, according to marketing materials circulated to creators and recent job listings.

Bilibili Expansion

Why Bilibili Thinks It Can Compete

Founded in 2009, Bilibili began as a niche online community centred on anime, gaming and youth culture before growing into one of China’s largest video platforms. The company is building teams in markets including the US, Japan and Europe, signaling a broader effort to turn its largely China-focused platform into a global creator business. It is also investing in AI-powered content moderation, which will become increasingly important as the platform operates across markets with different regulatory expectations.

Bilibili has already courted major Western names like MrBeast onto its main platform, and its standout “danmu” feature — real-time scrolling comments overlaid on videos — gives it a distinct edge for creator monetization that YouTube doesn’t offer.

The Roadblocks Ahead

A more concerted global expansion could challenge YouTube’s dominance, but it may also open up thorny questions about censorship, moderation, and data security for the company — the kind of fights that plagued TikTok in the US for years.
