Bhootni Release Date Moved to May 1: Now Faces Box Office Battle with Raid 2

In a bold reshuffle of Bollywood’s release calendar, the Bhootni release date has been officially pushed from April 18 to May 1. Featuring Sanjay Dutt and Mouni Roy in leading roles, the horror-action-comedy initially risked going head-to-head with Akshay Kumar’s patriotic war drama Kesari 2. However, the film’s producers opted for a later release to bypass the fierce competition.

This revised Bhootni release date now lands the film in direct contention with Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2, creating fresh uncertainty over its box office prospects. While the change appears tactical on the surface, many in the industry suggest deeper motives behind the adjustment.

Rumored Influences and Industry Speculation

Though the official statement points to unfinished VFX work as the reason behind the delay, insiders are skeptical. With less than a week left before the original Bhootni release date, the explanation of pending post-production doesn’t quite add up.

Industry whispers point toward Karan Johar potentially advising the makers to shift the release. While Johar’s involvement hasn’t been confirmed, the coincidence has ignited plenty of speculation in Bollywood circles. Trade watchers argue that such shifts are rarely technical and more likely strategic in nature, designed to optimize box office earnings and media attention.

Plot Overview: A College Cursed by the Virgin Tree

Directed and written by Sidhaant Sachdev, Bhootni—originally titled The Virgin Tree—delves into a quirky premise that blends horror, romance, and slapstick comedy. Set in a bustling college campus, the narrative follows a mischievous ghost, played by Mouni Roy, who haunts virgin boys every Valentine’s Day.

To break the annual curse, students enlist the help of Baba, portrayed by Sanjay Dutt—a former student turned mystical ghostbuster. With comic interludes, over-the-top action, and heavy CGI sequences, the film aims to provide a fresh take on the horror-comedy genre.

Stellar Cast and Surprising Debuts

The ensemble cast includes Sunny Singh, Palak Tiwari, Aasif Khan, and digital creator Nikunj Lotia, popularly known as Beyounick, who makes his Bollywood debut. Mouni Roy’s portrayal of the aggrieved spirit draws from her previous supernatural roles, giving her character an added layer of intrigue.

At the March 29 trailer launch in Mumbai, the makers shared their vision for an urban horror-comedy with mass appeal. The trailer teases fast-paced visuals, punchy humor, and supernatural thrills—all wrapped in a youthful, irreverent tone.

Sanjay Dutt’s Action-Packed Commitment

Director Sidhaant Sachdev couldn’t stop praising Dutt’s dedication to performing his own stunts. “He has leaped from 40 feet without a body double,” Sachdev revealed at the event.

Dutt, reflecting on the intense shoot, added: “I have been doing action for the last 40 years. The power of lord Shiva and his shiv tandav powered me during the shoot. We used to shoot till 5 am in the morning. Only the lord knows how we did it.”

The 65-year-old actor’s physical commitment brings a seasoned energy to the film and is expected to appeal to both longtime fans and younger audiences.

Box Office Crossroads: Clash with Raid 2 Looms

Though the Bhootni release date shift successfully avoided a direct collision with Kesari 2, the new window brings its own risks. May 1 also marks the release of Raid 2, a sequel with a loyal fanbase and serious traction. While Bhootni targets a lighter, comedy-loving crowd, Raid 2 appeals to fans of crime thrillers and Ajay Devgn’s no-nonsense on-screen persona.

The question remains whether the films can coexist or if one will cannibalize the other’s audience. Bhootni’s genre may work in its favor, drawing younger viewers seeking laughs and spooks, while Raid 2 could dominate among more serious cinema-goers.
