Top 10 Scariest Horror Movies at a Glance

The Picks, Explained

1. Don’t Move (2024) throws a grieving mother into a nightmare when a seemingly sympathetic stranger drugs and kidnaps her, forcing her to fight a paralyzing injection while racing to escape.

2. Under the Shadow (2016) is widely considered a modern horror masterpiece — set in 1980s war-torn Tehran, it follows a mother and daughter haunted by a malevolent spirit while bombs fall outside their apartment. Acclaimed critic Mark Kermode named it his best film of its release year.

3. Until Dawn (2025), based on the popular video game, traps a group of friends in a deadly time loop after a mining disaster site turns them into repeat murder victims — with their resets running dangerously low.

4. Apostle (2018) sends Dan Stevens undercover into a remote, sinister cult to rescue his sister, building to a violent, gore-soaked final act from Raid director Gareth Evans.

5. His House (2020) follows South Sudanese refugees adjusting to a haunted new life in small-town Europe — horror used as devastating dramatic art rather than simple scares.

6. Creep and Creep 2 (2014/2017) remain found-footage standouts, following a videographer hired by an increasingly unsettling client, played with unnerving commitment by Mark Duplass.

7. It’s What’s Inside (2024) turns a party game gone wrong — a literal body-swapping device — into a stylish, clever horror-comedy that’s more fun than frightening.

8. Gerald’s Game (2017), a Stephen King adaptation directed by Mike Flanagan, delivers pure psychological dread as Carla Gugino’s character is handcuffed to a bed alone after her husband suddenly dies.

9. Host (2020) reinvented pandemic-era horror with a Zoom séance gone catastrophically wrong — tight, mean, and effective in under an hour.

10. Bird Box (2018) stars Sandra Bullock as a mother forced into survivalist mode after unseen supernatural forces drive anyone who looks at them to suicide, becoming one of Netflix’s biggest hits ever.

Why These Films Still Hold Up

What ties this list together isn’t jump scares — it’s genuinely unsettling premises rooted in real fear: isolation, loss of control, and the unknown. Many draw from the broader tradition of psychological horror, a subgenre that leans on tension and dread rather than gore alone, which is exactly why titles like Under the Shadow and His House continue to be praised years after release.
