Step outside in Delhi, Chennai, or Ahmedabad in May. The mercury is kissing 45°C. The air is thick and unforgiving. And somewhere on a cricket ground baking under that sun, a bowler is running in for the 18th over of his fifth match in nine days.

Now ask yourself: is the Indian Premier League, cricket’s greatest spectacle, being staged at exactly the wrong time of year?

That’s the question the BCCI is now being forced to genuinely confront — and the answers emerging are as uncomfortable as a May afternoon in the Deccan.

IPL’s Heat & Scheduling Problem — The Facts

IssueDetail
Current IPL WindowMarch 28 – May 31
Proposed AlternativeSeptember – October
Peak Temperature (May, Chennai)38–44°C
Matches Played Per Team14 league + 3 playoff
Days Between Some MatchesAs few as 48 hours
Player Fatigue Cases IPL 2026Multiple — inc. Bumrah, Hardik Pandya
IPL 2028 Expansion Target94 matches (from 74)
ICC FTP Locked Until2027
Monsoon Issue (Sep-Oct)Heavy rain risk in several Indian cities

The Problem Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud

The IPL currently operates in a tight March-to-May slot — and the BCCI is actively grappling with the challenge of finding a bigger window post-2027, particularly as the board plans to expand the tournament from 74 to 94 matches from the 2028 season.

The heat problem isn’t just about fan comfort — it’s about player safety. Research published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine consistently shows that sustained high-temperature athletic performance without adequate recovery accelerates muscle breakdown, impairs decision-making, and significantly increases injury risk.

India’s own players have paid the price. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested. Hardik Pandya missed matches with back spasms. Axar Patel nursed a niggle. As we covered in our India T20 World Cup squad fatigue analysis on TechnoSports, the exhaustion of playing high-intensity cricket in Indian summer heat is real — and measurable.

Why September-October Makes Sense — But Isn’t Simple

The case for shifting IPL to September-October is straightforward: cooler temperatures, better player welfare, and the possibility of expanding to 94 matches without the physical carnage the current compressed window creates.

But the complications are equally real. The BCCI cannot make the change immediately as the ICC’s Future Tours Programme is currently locked in until 2027. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has acknowledged: “Since the bilaterals are locked in till 2027, we would need a bigger window to raise the number of games from 74 to 94. So we are looking for a bigger window post-2027.”

And then there’s the monsoon. September in Mumbai, Kolkata, or Chennai means real, consistent rain — the kind that interrupts matches and frustrates broadcasters. The BCCI’s own experience of staging IPL in the UAE during September showed that even desert heat at 38°C created “physically exhausting” afternoon conditions.

The Commercial Equation

There’s another dimension that rarely gets discussed publicly: advertising money. The current March-May window catches India’s pre-summer advertising peak — FMCG brands, telecom companies, and e-commerce platforms spend lavishly before the monsoon season quiets consumer sentiment. The IPL 2026 opener alone reportedly generated over 426 million views on JioHotstar — outperforming 51 of the 55 matches at the T20 World Cup 2026. Shifting to September-October means renegotiating the entire commercial ecosystem around Indian television advertising calendars. That’s not impossible. But it’s complicated.

The IPL’s heat problem isn’t going away — it’s getting worse as climate change raises Indian summer temperatures year on year. The BCCI’s September-October window debate is long overdue. The question isn’t whether the IPL needs to move. It’s whether cricket’s administrators have the courage to make it happen.
