Battlefield 6 was 2025’s best-selling game. It’s now lost 92% of its peak player count on Steam. And the community knows exactly why: not enough maps, and the ones available aren’t big enough. At the centre of the controversy is a blunt admission from producer Alexia Christofi — the studio is focusing on releasing high-quality maps, and two per season is what Battlefield Studios can currently manage. The community’s response has been swift and pointed: four major studios working on one game, and this is the output?

Battlefield 6 Map Situation: The Numbers vs Battlefield 4

The Battlefield 3 and 4 comparisons keep surfacing for a reason — they’re damning.

Four Studios, Half the Maps — The Optics Problem

Criterion was pulled from Need for Speed and folded into Battlefield. Motive’s Iron Man game was widely assumed to have been pushed back with no clear timeline due to the same resource constraints. Both fanbases were told to wait. The framing of “limited resources” is therefore a very hard sell.

On Steam, Battlefield 6 has lost nearly 92% of its original peak player count of 747,440 — and Season 2 has barely moved the needle. The core issue is structural: players want larger maps with open space, lots of capture points, and support for air vehicles — and too few of BF6’s launch maps checked those boxes.

DICE seasons producer Philipp Girette has confirmed Golmud Railway — a classic large-scale Battlefield 4 map — is being remade for BF6 as a direct response to the feedback. It won’t arrive in Season 2, but it signals DICE is at least leaning into its archive rather than waiting for new large-scale maps to be built from scratch.

The irony is rich: a content rollout that matches the hype of large DLC updates but with the trappings of a live-service model would be the perfect middle ground for Battlefield 6 — but DICE hasn’t worked that out yet.

FAQs

How many maps does Battlefield 6 release per season?

Battlefield Studios has confirmed two new maps per season as the standard cadence, with a third slot occasionally used for remakes of classic Battlefield maps like Golmud Railway.

Why is Battlefield 6 losing players despite being 2025’s best-selling game?

A lack of large maps with vehicle and aircraft support, a 4-month Season 2 delay, and a slower content cadence compared to Battlefield 4 have driven Steam player counts down 92% from the 747,440 peak.
