The sequel to one of Punjabi cinema’s most beloved comedies is here — and the numbers aren’t matching the legacy. Bambukat 2, starring Ammy Virk and Binnu Dhillon, wrapped its opening weekend with a worldwide gross of approximately ₹8.50 crore — and while that headline sounds decent, the India vs. overseas split reveals a far more complicated picture.
The original Bambukat (2016) was a blockbuster that opened to bumper numbers and rode extraordinary word-of-mouth to a massive lifetime. Comedy sequels with this kind of goodwill behind them typically triple their predecessor’s opening pace. This one didn’t come close.

What Went Right — and What Didn’t
The overseas performance ranges from so-so to good. Canada was on par with Sarbala and actually outperformed Saunkan Saunkanay 2 — and had Canada not delivered, it would have been a total lost cause.
But India is the real story — and not a happy one. Compared to other recent Ammy Virk films, the opening weekend falls short of Saunkan Saunkanay 2 (₹15 crore) and Sarbala (₹11.25 crore). Sunday’s growth was also quite mediocre — it didn’t jump the way a comedy with solid word-of-mouth typically should.
The Punjabi film box office in India has fallen off from the highs of the 2010s. A sustained wave of emigration in the late 2010s and early 2020s has reshaped the core audience base — a large chunk of business has shifted from India to overseas markets like Canada and Australia. It is now common for a Punjabi film’s overseas haul to be several times its domestic total — something unthinkable pre-COVID.
The disappointment isn’t really about Bambukat 2 as a film. It’s about the structural demographic shift of its natural audience — many of whom are now watching from Toronto, not Chandigarh.
