‘Balan: The Boy’ Review — A Slow-Burn Malayalam Thriller That Earns Its Emotional Weight

Director Chidambaram, best known for the blockbuster Manjummel Boys, returns with a very different kind of story in Balan: The Boy — a psychological thriller now streaming on ZEE5 after its June 19 theatrical run. Written by Aavesham‘s Jithu Madhavan, the film trades conventional plot twists for atmosphere, tension, and a deeply human mother-son bond.

Years later, taken in by Abbas, Balan sets out to find his mother again, relying on the very survival instincts she instilled in him — a search that forces him to confront difficult truths about her past and his own resilience.

What Works

The film’s biggest strength is its unconventional, non-chronological storytelling that leans into psychological depth over shock twists. Tension builds gradually through everyday situations rather than dramatic reveals, and the world-building shifts convincingly from peaceful surroundings to something far more unsettling. The emotionally rich bond between Amma and Balan anchors the entire story, especially in a strong, tightly written first half.

Technically, the film impresses too — tight close-ups and confined framing heighten the sense of unease, while a muted color palette and restrained score from Sushin Shyam build atmosphere without overwhelming key scenes.

Where It Falls Short

The second half shifts toward a more conventional thriller structure, losing some of the film’s early uniqueness. A few abrupt time jumps leave certain portions feeling underdeveloped, and while the mother-son relationship lands emotionally, the bond between Balan and Abbas doesn’t carry the same weight.

The Performances

Farzana Palathingal delivers a standout, deeply realistic performance as Amma, while young actor Adhisheshan KR impresses as the younger Balan, handling the character’s emotional struggles with natural ease. Tovino Thomas, in a brief supporting role, adds real presence whenever he’s on screen.

Despite uneven pacing in the middle stretch, Balan: The Boy succeeds as an atmospheric, character-driven thriller worth watching — especially for viewers who appreciate slow-burn storytelling over flashy twists.
