When you need a tank that can bulldoze through Kalos’ toughest Dragon-types, Avalugg is your go-to powerhouse. This massive iceberg Pokemon returns in Pokemon Legends Z-A with devastating Defense stats that make it nearly indestructible during story battles. Let’s break down how to build the ultimate Avalugg that dominates Lumoise City’s challenges.

Pokemon Legends Avalugg Quick Build Guide

Avalugg’s Stat Breakdown

Understanding Avalugg’s numbers reveals why it’s such a specialized Pokemon:

HP: 95 (Solid survivability)
Attack: 117 (Impressive offensive power)
Defense: 184 (Absolutely elite—among the highest in-game)
Special Attack: 44 (Essentially useless)
Special Defense: 46 (Major weakness)
Speed: 28 (Slower than molasses)
Total: 514

That mind-blowing 184 Defense makes Avalugg a physical damage sponge, but its pitiful 46 Special Defense and 28 Speed create exploitable weaknesses. Think of Avalugg as a specialized tool rather than an all-purpose fighter.

The Perfect Nature Choice

Since Avalugg’s Special Attack sits at a pathetic 44, you’ll never use special moves anyway. This makes nature selection straightforward:

Adamant Nature (Attack+, Special Attack-): The top choice for maximizing damage output while dumping an already useless stat. Your physical moves hit even harder without sacrificing anything important.

Brave Nature (Attack+, Speed-): Alternative option that boosts Attack while reducing Speed. Since Avalugg already crawls at 28 Speed, this nature matters less, but it’s viable if Adamant isn’t available.

Both natures emphasize Avalugg’s natural strengths—being an unstoppable physical attacker that can absorb punishment while dishing out massive damage.

Optimal Moveset for Maximum Impact

Build your Avalugg around sustainability and raw power with these four moves:

Icicle Crash: Your primary STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) Ice-type move. Devastating against Dragon, Flying, Grass, and Ground-types commonly encountered throughout the campaign.

Stone Edge: Provides crucial Rock-type coverage, especially effective against Flying-types and other threats that resist Ice moves.

Earthquake: Essential Ground-type coverage that handles Fire, Steel, and Rock-types that otherwise wall Avalugg. One of the best physical moves in the game.

Recover: The key to Avalugg’s longevity. Restores HP during extended battles, allowing you to tank multiple hits while gradually wearing down opponents.

This moveset creates a self-sustaining fortress that handles most story encounters. The combination of type coverage and sustainability makes Avalugg perfect for grinding through tough battles.

Where to Find Alpha Avalugg

Skip the evolution grind by catching the Alpha Avalugg in Wild Zone 12 at level 56. This powerful variant comes with an excellent moveset pre-loaded and significantly higher stats than regular Avalugg. Bring a balanced team to handle this tough encounter—its high Defense makes it challenging to take down quickly.

Campaign vs. Competitive Reality

Here’s the honest truth: Avalugg dominates story mode but struggles in competitive online battles. Its abysmal Special Defense and Speed make it vulnerable to special attackers who can exploit that 46 Special Defense before Avalugg attacks. Reserve this Pokemon for campaign Dragon-slaying rather than PvP competition.

FAQs

Should I use Avalugg in competitive battles in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

Avalugg struggles in competitive PvP due to its extremely low Speed (28) and Special Defense (46). Special attackers easily exploit these weaknesses, often knocking out Avalugg before it can attack. However, it excels in story mode battles where you can control matchups and leverage its incredible 184 Defense and 117 Attack against physical threats. Save Avalugg for campaign content where it truly shines.

What’s the fastest way to get a strong Avalugg in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

Head to Wild Zone 12 and capture the Alpha Avalugg at level 56. This variant comes pre-leveled with strong moves already learned, saving you hours of grinding and evolution. Bring Pokemon with super-effective moves like Fighting, Fire, or Steel-types to weaken it efficiently. Once caught, ensure it has either Adamant or Brave nature for optimal performance.
