Australian GP 2023: Chaotic scenes as Verstappen continues winning

Max Verstappen claimed his first-ever career win at the Australian GP, after starting from pole position in a very dramatic race. His victory gave Red Bull their first win at Melbourne in 12 years, as he continued his quest to defend his world title once again.

Lewis Hamilton joined him on the podium as he finished second, followed by Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin. There was little flow to the race, with safety cars and red flags making it a tumultuous affair. George Russell was the early leader in the race, but his car caught fire on Lap 18 which caused him to retire from the race.

Australian GP 2023: Chaotic scenes in Melbourne

Charles Leclerc crashed out of the race on Lap 1 itself due to a collision with Lance Stroll, and left the Ferrari driver very disappointed, with him calling it the worst start to a season ever. Alex Albon also crashed out of the race, causing two safety car situations in quick succession.

Kevin Magnussen hit the wall on turn 2, after it seemed like the race would be developing. His crash caused another safety car, and another red flag. However, more chaos would follow as Carlos Sainz and Alonso were forced into a spin on Turn 1.

A rolling start would follow, as the cars arranged themselves behind the safety car in the order of the previous restart. And soon enough, Verstappen crossed the line for his first win at the Australian GP.

Sainz was hit with a five-second penalty for his collision with Alonso, which caused him to finish in 12th place, promoting every driver behind him.
