1994, Revisited: Netflix’s New Schumacher Documentary Dates Its Grid Return

Before he was a seven-time World Champion, Michael Schumacher had to survive one of the most brutal, tragedy-marked seasons in Formula 1 history. Netflix is taking fans straight back into it. “Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend” now has an official global release date, and it’s shaping up to be one of the year’s most emotional sports documentaries.

What’s Confirmed for Schumacher?

“Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend” premieres globally on Netflix on October 2, 2026. The documentary zeroes in on the 1994 season, the year a 25-year-old Schumacher went from talented underdog to World Champion, sparking the wave of “Schumi Mania” across Germany. It arrives as a spiritual successor to Netflix’s 2021 “Schumacher” documentary and rides the continued momentum of “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” recently renewed for a ninth season.

The film promises to be an emotional and gripping look back at a season defined by extremes: the highs of Schumacher’s opening win in Brazil and title-clinching finish in Australia, set against the devastating deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at Imola, plus mid-season manipulation allegations that threatened his championship.

Who’s Involved

Beyond the racing drama, the documentary offers an intimate portrait of Schumacher through interviews with his wife, Corinna Schumacher, who shares insight into their early relationship, along with key F1 figures including former Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone, ex-driver David Coulthard, Schumacher’s former manager Willi Weber, and German motorsport commentators Kai Ebel and Heiko Waßer.
