Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Real Madrid: Alex Berenguer scores late winner to seal Copa del Rey semifinal spot

Athletic Bilbao knocked Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey, earning a 1-0 victory against Los Blancos at San Mames. The winning goal came as late as the 89th minute when Alex Berenguer stepped up to score.

The 26-year-old received the ball at the edge of the box, and took it into his left foot with a skillful move. He then slotted the ball past Thibaut Courtois, with a low effort into the bottom right corner. There was very little time for Real Madrid to grow back into the game, and ultimately, the home team managed to get the win.

The game surely looked like it was headed to extra time, before Alex Berenguer turned into a hero for the home crowd by scoring the late winner.

Athletic Bilbao get their revenge against Real Madrid

It was only a few weeks ago that Los Blancos defeated Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Supercopa de Espana in Riyadh to win the first silverware of the season.

And with their 1-0 win in the Copa del Rey, Bilbao have avenged the loss by dumping the La Liga frontrunners out of the competition. Real Madrid had a number of great chances in the game themselves, but without Karim Benzema, the attack lacked the final finish.

Bilbao will be facing either Real Betis, Rayo Vallecano or Valencia in the semi finals. They have progressed to the finals of the Copa del Rey twice in a row, and have come up short on both occasions. The third time could finally prove to be the charm for the club to win the trophy for the 25th time.
