At 60, Milind Soman Swims Europe to Africa — And Makes the Rest of Us Rethink Every Excuse We’ve Ever Made

Let’s be honest — most of us struggle to get out of bed for a morning walk. And then there’s Milind Soman, who at 60 years old just swam 15 kilometres across the Strait of Gibraltar, from Spain to Morocco, connecting two continents through sheer grit and willpower.

On May 1, 2026, Soman completed the open-water crossing from Tarifa in Spain to the coast of Morocco — one of the most iconic and demanding marathon swim routes on the planet.

Milind Soman: The Feat

Why This Is No Ordinary Swim?

The Strait of Gibraltar is notorious for its strong, erratic currents and heavy marine traffic, making it one of the world’s most challenging open-water swim routes. The water stretch is known for its unpredictable currents and challenging conditions, which is exactly what makes Soman’s achievement so jaw-dropping.

This isn’t just a fitness flex — it’s a masterclass in what consistent, disciplined training can do to the human body over decades. Soman didn’t just swim across continents; he quietly redefined what being 60 looks like.

The Man Beyond the Swim

Beyond his fitness pursuits, Soman has remained active in entertainment — appearing in the film Emergency, the Netflix series The Royals, and the Tamil crime-mystery series Kaattaan featuring Vijay Sethupathi.

Swimming itself is one of the most complete forms of exercise — building cardiovascular endurance, full-body strength, lung capacity, and mental toughness all at once. Soman’s dedication to the sport is a reminder that age is truly just a number when discipline leads the way.
