On its 3rd Friday, Assi managed only an estimated Rs. 10 lakh — a 33% drop from the previous day, and a staggering 75% crash from the 2nd Friday. The film’s theatrical journey is all but over, with the final tally expected to land somewhere between Rs. 10 crore and Rs. 10.50 crore nett in India. That’s a clear flop verdict, no matter how you look at it.

The film features an impressive ensemble — Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub alongside Taapsee — but the cast alone couldn’t drive footfalls. For context, the previous Taapsee–Anubhav Sinha collaboration Thappad had collected around Rs. 30 crore in its full run. Assi won’t even come close to a third of that.

The Bigger Problem for Small Films

Assi’s story isn’t just about one film underperforming — it reflects a growing crisis for small and mid-budget Bollywood. Post-pandemic, audiences have simply shifted their mindset. If a film doesn’t immediately excite them, they’re perfectly content to wait the 6–8 weeks it takes to hit a streaming platform. The theatrical urgency is gone, and without it, films like Assi struggle to sustain even basic occupancy past Week 1.

The fix, as many in the industry suggest, is drastically extending OTT windows — pushing them to 5 or 6 months — so that the theatrical experience retains its exclusivity for longer. Until that happens, films like Assi will keep paying the price.
