While India came into the match as strong favorites, having dominated the tournament and defeating China 3-0 in the opener, the final was anything but straightforward. China, the lowest ranked team in the competition, showed incredible resolve and defensive discipline. India controlled much of the possession, 84% by halftime – but couldn’t find the back of the net as China’s defense, led by goalkeeper Wang Weihao, kept the Indian forwards at bay.

The first three quarters ended in a stalemate, with India’s attacking trio of Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, and captain Harmanpreet Singh finding no way through China’s determined backline. India’s frustration mounted as they missed multiple penalty corners and open play chances.

Jugraj Singh Breaks the Deadlock

As the match entered its final quarter, India knew they needed something special to break the deadlock. That moment came in the 51st minute when captain Harmanpreet Singh, known for his powerful drag flicks, made a brilliant run down the left flank during a long corner. His superb pass found Jugraj Singh in the striking circle, who calmly pushed the ball past China’s goalkeeper, Weihao, to give India the crucial lead.

Despite China’s late efforts, including pulling their goalkeeper for an extra field player in the final minutes, India’s defense held firm. The crowd, vocal throughout the match, fell silent as the final whistle confirmed India’s triumph.
