Bollywood’s beloved comic actor Arshad Warsi dropped a bombshell about his 2004 cult comedy Hulchul, revealing it remains his biggest professional regret. In a candid interview with The Lallantop, the Jolly LLB star admitted he felt “tricked” into the Priyadarshan film starring Akshaye Khanna and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Arshad Warsi: The Promise vs Reality

Warsi revealed that late screenwriter Neeraj Vora convinced him by promising a role similar to Akshay Kumar’s iconic character in Hera Pheri—one of Bollywood’s most memorable comic roles.

What Actually Happened

Promised	Delivered
Akshay-like lead role	Hero’s sidekick
Co-lead with storyline	Supporting friend
Professional costume	Knee-length “nightie” shirt
“Damn good role”	“Bad experience”

“Humare Neeraj Vohra sahab said, ‘Tune Hera Pheri dekhi hai? Usmein jo Akshay Kumar ka role hai vohi same role hai,'” Warsi recalled. Excited about working with Priyadarshan, he immediately agreed.

However, reality hit hard. “We reached the set aur aisa mujhe dhakka laga (I got a shock),” he confessed. He quickly realized the massive difference between being co-leads who are friends versus being the hero’s friend—he wasn’t a partner but merely a sidekick.

The Wardrobe Disaster

Adding insult to injury, Warsi’s costume shocked him. “I was given a shirt till my knee length with three-fourths sleeves. I wasn’t sure if it was a nightie or a shirt,” he revealed. The frustrated actor wore his own clothes in half the picture. “I don’t think even Priyadarshan knows about it.”

Despite disappointment, Warsi honored his commitment. “I found myself a good actor because I didn’t allow my inner anguish to show on screen,” demonstrating true professionalism.

The Ironic Success

Ironically, Hulchul became a commercial hit and cult classic. The ensemble cast included Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, and Amrish Puri. Released November 2004, audiences loved Warsi’s character despite his behind-the-scenes frustration.

Defending Akshaye Khanna

Recently, Warsi defended Hulchul co-star Akshaye Khanna amid Drishyam 3 controversy. “Akshaye is a very serious guy, brilliant actor. He likes his own world,” Warsi stated, suggesting what seems aloof is simply Khanna’s conscious lifestyle choice.

Current Projects

Despite disappointment, Warsi’s career flourished. Upcoming: King (2026) with Shah Rukh Khan, Welcome To The Jungle (2026), and Jolly LLB 3.
