Argentina’s Petition to Replay the World Cup Final Is Going Nowhere — Here’s Why

A Change.org petition has crossed 80,000 signatures demanding FIFA replay the 2026 World Cup final. It has zero chance of working, but the story behind it says a lot about how hard this loss has hit Argentina.

What the Petition Actually Claims

Spain lifted the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy after a 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina at MetLife Stadium on July 19, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute. Argentine fan Gisela Sánchez launched a Change.org petition afterward, accusing Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić of a “controversial and corrupt” performance and asking FIFA to review the match. The petition has since crossed 80,000 signatures but offers no verified evidence beyond social media clips its creator claims show incidents favoring Spain.

Why Argentina’s FIFA Won’t Touch This

Match replays under FIFA’s regulations are reserved for exceptional circumstances, like serious rule violations, not fan dissatisfaction over refereeing calls. Precedent backs this up: over 200,000 French fans similarly petitioned after Argentina’s 2022 final win, and nothing came of it. A similar petition even surfaced during this tournament after Spain’s semifinal win over France, gathering more than 82,000 signatures with no response from FIFA.

How Argentina’s Own Camp Responded

Rather than back the petition, Argentina’s own leadership pushed back. Head coach Lionel Scaloni reportedly acknowledged Spain deserved the win despite the disappointment, and Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia urged fans to accept the result with grace, stating that Spain were simply the better team on the day.

The Bigger Picture Beyond the Petition

The aftermath wasn’t just about signatures. FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into post-match clashes between players, including incidents involving Argentina’s Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina. Amid the tension, one moment stood out: Spain’s teenage star Lamine Yamal shared an emotional embrace with Argentina captain Lionel Messi after the final whistle, with Yamal later revealing Messi’s parting words of encouragement to him.

Bottom Line

However loud the petition gets, FIFA’s rules leave essentially no path for a replay based on fan sentiment alone. Spain’s title stands, and the real story emerging from this final may be less about the referee and more about a graceful embrace between two of football’s biggest stars.
