At its Wonderlust event on September 12, Apple will also reveal the iPhone 15 range and Apple Watch Series 9, along with a number of software improvements. According to rumours, the new devices would use innovative production and design processes.
It was previously claimed that Apple uses 3D printing to produce the chassis and mechanical components of the Apple Watch Series 9.
The iPhone series may eventually employ the same 3D printing production method if the business decides the new approach has potential. Gurman claims in a recent Bloomberg story that Apple is preparing a significant change to its production method. According to the expert, the Apple Watch Series 9 would have a chassis made using 3D printing technology, which could offer several advantages over the present production process. The iPhone might eventually feature 3D printing capabilities if the corporation is successful in its endeavour.
There are a tonne of advantages to 3D printing an iPhone or an Apple Watch, as was already highlighted. One benefit is that the approach requires less material to produce the product’s chassis and other components. Currently, the business cuts metal slabs to the right size for the product.
After that, the chassis goes through a series of procedures to become categorised as usable. A few processes would be removed by 3D printing, saving valuable manufacturing time that causes supply bottlenecks.
The production method would also enable cost reduction because it utilises less material. As a result, Apple might be able to raise its profit margins or maintain its price for a while. Using a method known as “binder jetting,” the company is experimenting with the production process.
It enables the printing of the shape using a powdered material. The second method includes applying pressure and heat to the substance in order to harden it. Finally, milling is used to improve the final product.
This is not the first time information about Apple’s attempt to adopt 3D printing methods for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 has surfaced. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier stated that the corporation would employ the production method to create a few mechanical components.
This year, the Apple Watch Ultra will include 3D-printed components, claims Kuo. However, Gurman points out that Apple will employ the manufacturing method for the stainless steel Apple Watch Series 9 chassis and that titanium will be used in the procedure in 2019.
