According to The Information, Apple’s mixed-reality headset will be the most complicated hardware device ever built by the business, with an unconventional design that has proven to be an unparalleled challenge to manufacture. According to the description, the headset has an unconventional curved design, thinness, and ultralight weight.

According to The Information, several models show a piece of curved glass with edges wrapped in a smooth aluminum frame that appears to be slightly thicker than an iPhone. Because of the tiny profile, users who use glasses must purchase prescription lenses that magnetically connect to the headset.

Apple had to create a first-of-its-kind “bent motherboard” to fit inside the curved outer shell of the headset.

Inside the headset, carbon fibre is employed to stiffen the frame without adding weight. A little dial above the right eye switches between augmented and virtual reality, while a power button is situated above the left eye. A spherical connector resembling an Apple Watch charger attaches to the headset’s left temple and connects to a waist-mounted battery pack via a cord.

The headset’s headband is mostly soft and is coupled to two short, rigid temples that also house the left and right speakers. For comfort against the wearer’s face, a soft, removable cover attaches to the back of the headset. Apple is believed to have considered adding extra eye-tracking cameras or making changes to the motorised lenses to accommodate other facial shape.

Apple’s industrial design team appears to have pushed for the front of the headset to be composed of a thin piece of curved glass, necessitating the concealment of more than a dozen cameras and sensors for aesthetic reasons.

fears have also been raised regarding the glass warping the images taken by the cameras, which could create nausea if not corrected, and the material is more prone to shattering than an iPhone screen due to its form, raising fears about shattered glass from the headset hurting users.

The design is said to be the primary reason for the device’s $3,000 retail price. Due to the device’s form and densely packed circuits, assembly workers appear to strain to manoeuvre equipment and install components at unusual angles inside the device. Testing of the glass enclosure and cameras also takes much longer than for other Apple products.

The headset’s microOLED displays are allegedly said to be so pricey that Apple must repair them rather than throw them away. Because of their small size and pixel density, Sony, the displays’ supplier, may struggle to produce enough panels for more than 250,000 headsets this year.
