Apple might just have dropped all of its plans for a future large-screen iMac

According to a new rumour from 9to5Mac, Apple has no plans to create a larger-screen iMac. According to the publication, Apple will not introduce a larger iMac “in the near future,” citing unnamed people with knowledge of the company’s product pipeline.

Apple cancelled the Intel-based 27-inch iMac with the release of the Mac Studio, causing some misunderstandings regarding the iMac’s future. Apple confirmed to Ars Technica that the 27-inch iMac “has reached the end of life,” implying that the company would not release a new 27-inch model to complement the 24-inch iMac.

Despite the 27-inch iMac’s discontinuance, there have been reports of an iMac Pro with a larger screen in development, however, at least part of those speculations may have been confused with the Studio Display. According to display analyst Ross Young, what his sources assumed was an iMac Pro is a “Studio Display Pro” that will be released later this year, maybe alongside the Mac Pro.

Young no longer believes that an iMac Pro will be released this summer, and 9to5Mac’s research appears to back him up. Apple “currently has no plans to release additional high-end versions of its all-in-one desktop for the time being,” according to the site, albeit a 24-inch M2 version of the iMac is due out in 2023.

Other sources continue to speculate that an iMac Pro will be released at some time. Last Sunday, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that an iMac Pro will be released in 2023, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is still working on one.

It’s unclear how an iMac Pro would fit into the Mac portfolio now that the more powerful Mac Studio is available, and it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that a new larger-screen iMac will be released in 2022. Customers looking for a powerful desktop system should consider the Mac Studio, which starts at $1,999, while those looking for an all-in-one machine may consider the 24-inch iMac.
