Antony Starr Leads Netflix’s Breakers: Mysterious Surfer Drama Now in Production in Western Australia

Antony Starr has landed his next major television role following The Boys’ final season, starring in Netflix’s ambitious new drama series Breakers. The Australian-set thriller, which is currently in production in Western Australia, follows two American backpackers who become entangled in a seemingly perfect surfing community led by Starr’s charismatic and mysterious character Brando. Produced by the acclaimed Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer, The End of the F***ing World) in partnership with BBC Studios Productions Australia, Breakers marks the first Netflix series to shoot in Western Australia. Filming began recently and will wrap in June 2026, with no official release date yet announced, though Netflix promises “the Breakers wave will crash onto Netflix sometime soon.”

Production and Creative Team

Breakers represents a significant production milestone as the first Netflix series to be shot in Western Australia. The production is supported by Screenwest and the WA Government through the Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive, demonstrating the region’s commitment to attracting major international productions.

The Story and Cast

The series follows two American best friends who embark on a backpacking adventure across Australia, only to be drawn into a seemingly idyllic surfing community. Their lives become entangled with Brando, the charismatic yet mysterious leader of this close-knit group. The narrative explores themes of friendship, deception, and the darkness lurking beneath the perfect surface of the surfer lifestyle.

Antony Starr’s character Brando appears designed to showcase the actor’s range following his iconic role as Homelander in The Boys. Like his previous character, Brando combines surface-level charm with underlying psychological complexity and a darker edge that drives narrative tension.

Creative Pedigree

The project boasts impressive creative credentials. Writer Pete Jackson is known for Somewhere Boy and The Death of Bunny Munro. Directors Mary Nighy and Ng Choon Ping bring substantial experience from acclaimed television projects. Mary Nighy has directed episodes of Industry and the acclaimed series Say Nothing, while Ng Choon Ping directed What It Feels Like for a Girl and Femme.

Clerkenwell Films’ involvement ensures the project maintains high production standards and meaningful storytelling, as evidenced by their previous successes including the Emmy-nominated Baby Reindeer and the cult phenomenon The End of the F***ing World.

Antony Starr’s Next Chapter

Starr is executive producing alongside Jackson and Clerkenwell Films partners Gavin O’Grady, Petra Fried, and Wim De Greef. His involvement extends beyond acting to shaping the creative direction of the series, reflecting his commitment to the project.

The timing of Breakers comes as Starr prepares for the final season of The Boys, which premieres April 8, 2026, on Prime Video. He recently wrapped filming on Neon’s Andy Warhol biopic Samo Lives. This busy schedule demonstrates Starr’s elevated status in the entertainment industry following his acclaimed portrayal of Homelander.

Australia’s Growing Production Hub

Breakers joins a growing slate of international and local productions filming in Australia, including The Survivors, Apple Cider Vinegar, Surviving Summer, Heartbreak High Season 3, My Brilliant Career, and Allen.

The Western Australian location offers diverse landscapes ideal for the surfing-centered narrative and provides production incentives that attract major streaming platforms.
