Angel Di Maria is set to sign for Benfica for the 2023/24 season, with an agreement reached for a contract until the end of the coming campaign.
He left Juventus at the end of the season, upon the expiry of his contract and will now be moving to the Portuguese league as a free agent. Di Maria had offers from the Saudi league as well, but has decided to move to Benfica after considering all offers.
One of the priorities for the attacker is to make the Argentina national team for the 2024 Copa America. And for that, he will have to play at the top level for one more year.
He joined Juventus last summer on a one-year deal, but hasn’t been able to negotiate a new one with the board in spite of being a solid contributor on the pitch. This season, he has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 32 games across the Serie A and Europa League.
Angel Di Maria returns to Benfica for one season
The 35-year-old has shown remarkable fitness and quality this season, especially at the 2022 World Cup where he won the tournament with Argentina.
He has proven that he still has the ability to play at a high level, but cannot play as consistently due to his age. Regardless, with his experience and quality, he will no doubt be able to contribute a huge amount to whichever team that he joins next.
Benfica are expected to confirm the arrival of the winger soon, after reaching an agreement with him over the final details of the contract.
