Andy Samberg Praises The Naked Gun Reboot: “Pure Joy” with Wall-to-Wall Jokes

Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg has given a glowing endorsement for the upcoming The Naked Gun reboot, calling it “pure joy” and praising the film’s “wall-to-wall jokes.” With the highly anticipated comedy set to hit theaters on August 1, 2025, Samberg’s praise adds significant weight to the film’s potential success.

The Naked Gun Reboot: A Comedy Legacy Continues

The Naked Gun is an upcoming American action comedy film directed by Akiva Schaffer, who co-wrote the script with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. It serves as a legacy sequel to Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994) and is the fourth film in The Naked Gun franchise.

Andy Samberg’s Enthusiastic Review

Samberg told ScreenRant: “We’re not in Naked Gun, but Naked Gun is so good. It’s just pure joy. I mean, I’m biased, obviously; Akiva is my guy. But everyone I’ve seen it with all walked out saying the same thing.”

The praise carries extra significance because Samberg’s fellow Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer has helmed the project. Having worked together on numerous comedy projects, including Saturday Night Live sketches and films, Samberg’s endorsement speaks to the quality of Schaffer’s directorial vision.

The Lonely Island Connection

The collaboration between Samberg and Schaffer extends far beyond their Saturday Night Live days. As core members of The Lonely Island comedy group, they’ve created viral hits and comedy films that have defined internet humor for over a decade. Samberg and Schaffer have made some fantastic comedies together, and fans can’t wait to see what Schaffer does on his own.

What Makes This Reboot Special

Following the template of the Leslie Nielsen original, The Naked Gun reboot will deliver relentless campy humor. It also doesn’t shirk from double entendres: a snippet from the trailer teased a seemingly risque scene with co-star Pamela Anderson.

The film promises to honor the legacy of the original while bringing fresh energy to the franchise. Neeson poking fun at his own action star image could be amusingly self-deprecating, as the actor has a rather intense persona in all of his films, barely exuding any sense of humor.

Liam Neeson’s Comedy Transformation

The casting of Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr. represents one of the most intriguing aspects of the reboot. Known for his intense action roles in films like “Taken,” Neeson’s comedic turn has drawn particular praise from those who’ve seen early screenings.

More than 30 years after the last movie in the original trilogy, ‘The Naked Gun’ is reloaded and rebooted, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. The stars, director Akiva Schaffer, producer Seth MacFarlane, and more preview their new entry in the iconic spoof-comedy franchise.

Early Reactions and Expectations

Early screenings have shown the film to be “perfectly in tone with the original,” suggesting that Schaffer has successfully captured the essence of what made the Leslie Nielsen films so beloved.

The positive buzz extends beyond just Samberg’s endorsement. Everyone who has seen it with Samberg “all walked out saying the same thing” about the film’s quality and entertainment value.

The Comedy Landscape in 2025

The Naked Gun reboot arrives at a time when audiences are craving well-crafted comedy films. With streaming platforms dominating the entertainment landscape, theatrical comedies have become increasingly rare, making this reboot even more significant.

The film’s approach to humor appears to balance nostalgia with contemporary comedy sensibilities, potentially appealing to both longtime fans of the franchise and new audiences.

Marketing and Release Strategy

Paramount Pictures is positioning the film for a wide theatrical release on August 1, 2025, suggesting confidence in its commercial potential. The studio’s marketing campaign has emphasized both the star power of Liam Neeson and the comedy pedigree of director Akiva Schaffer.

What This Means for Comedy Films

The success of The Naked Gun reboot could signal a revival of theatrical comedy films. With Andy Samberg’s endorsement highlighting the film’s “wall-to-wall jokes,” it suggests that audiences might be ready for a return to the type of rapid-fire, sight-gag comedy that made the original films so successful.

The film represents more than just a reboot – it’s a potential catalyst for renewing interest in big-budget comedy productions that prioritize laughs over everything else.
