He could have arrived in a motorcade with a security circus. Instead, Anant Ambani walked into Tirumala in a simple white veshti, bowed before Lord Venkateswara, and gave away something he has been known by for years — his signature long hair. No drama. Just devotion.

On June 28, 2026, the Reliance Industries Executive Director visited the sacred Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh and completed the ancient tonsure ritual — offering his hair as an act of surrender and gratitude before one of the world’s most visited religious sites.

What Is the Tonsure Ritual — and Why Does It Matter?

The tonsure at Tirumala — locally known as Mokku Kattadam or Kalyana Katta — is one of Hinduism’s most profound acts of devotion. Devotees shave their heads as acts of penance, gratitude, or to fulfill vows made to deities. It symbolises the surrender of pride and ego before God — a heartfelt commitment to the divine, signifying humility, transformation, and inner purification.

For Anant, whose long hair had become one of his most instantly recognisable features in recent years, giving it up carries even more weight. This wasn’t just ritual. It was personal.

Anant participated in the early morning Suprabhata Seva before having darshan of Lord Venkateswara. Following the darshan, Vedic scholars blessed him with Veda Ashirvachanam at the Ranganayakula Mandapam inside the temple complex.

Beyond Prayer — A ₹27.5 Crore Gift to Tirupati

The visit wasn’t just spiritual. Reliance Industries announced the donation of 25 electric buses worth around ₹27.5 crore to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), along with support for drivers and EV charging infrastructure. A fitting pairing of faith and responsibility.

The visit also comes just two weeks before Anant and Radhika Merchant’s second wedding anniversary on July 12 — widely seen as a deeply intentional act of gratitude and prayer for blessings ahead of the milestone.
