Not too long ago, Valencia were regulars in Europe, but are now in a relegation battle. Their fall from grace has been quite hard to watch, with fans now protesting the situation at the club.
They were third in the all-time La Liga table very recently. But, they have now become a shadow of their former selves and are battling to stay up in the top flight. ‘Lim go home’ is one of the slogans against the owner of the club, Peter Lim, under whom things have taken a serious turn for the worse.
How did Valencia have such a fall from grace?
Even though they are in the bottom three, their average home attendance ranges around 40,000 this season. But, the fans remain very vocal about their discontent at the way things are at the club. And the protests don’t seem to be on the verge of stopping anytime soon.
Gennaro Gattuso was appointed as the new head coach for the season. But, in spite of having a positive start to the campaign, he left after not being given any January transfer window signings. And in the process, he became the tenth manager to leave during Peter Lim’s nine years in charge.
The last time Valencia qualified for the Champions League was in 2019 under Marcelino, who was sacked after last season. The reason behind it was because they did not like his pursuit of the Spanish Cup, overlooking the league.
Valencia were recently overtaken by Atletico Madrid in the all-time La Liga points table, as a result of their diminishing success. And now, they have become a selling club, following the model of buying players on the cheap and selling them at a huge profit. But clearly, fans want the club to be much more than that.
