Anaconda (2025) Review: Jack Black and Paul Rudd’s Meta Comedy Finds Its Bite

Christmas 2025 delivered an unexpected gift to comedy fans—a meta reimagining of the 1997 cult classic Anaconda starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd. But is this self-aware creature feature the funniest movie of the year, or does it squeeze the fun out of its own clever premise? The answer lies somewhere in the middle, making this a fascinating study in modern Hollywood’s obsession with IP resurrection.

Anaconda : The High-Concept Hook That Actually Works

Director Tom Gormican, who previously helmed The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, brings his meta sensibilities to this PG-13 action-comedy. The premise is brilliantly simple: childhood best friends Griff (Paul Rudd) and Doug (Jack Black) decide to remake their favorite 1997 film Anaconda on a shoestring budget in the actual Amazon—only to encounter a real, very hungry anaconda.

Griff is a struggling LA actor who can’t land anything beyond bit TV roles, while Doug abandoned his Hollywood dreams to become a wedding videographer in Buffalo. Their reunion, sparked by rediscovering a VHS tape of their childhood movie projects, ignites dormant creative passions.

What Slithers Right Into Your Heart

The Black-Rudd Dynamic: Their chemistry feels natural and lived-in, delivering the kind of friendship authenticity that elevates even weak material. For Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story fans, this reunion sparks nostalgic joy.

Steve Zahn Steals Every Scene: Playing cinematographer Kenny, Zahn channels his Saving Silverman energy with perfect comedic timing. Critics unanimously agree he’s the stealth MVP, outshining even the leads in several sequences.

Industry Satire with Teeth: The film’s front half delivers sharp jabs at Hollywood’s obsession with “THEMES” and awards-season pretensions. Jack Black whispering the word “themes” while squinting has become an instant meme moment.

Selton Mello’s Heartbreaking Snake Handler: Brazilian actor Selton Mello provides surprising emotional depth as Santiago, the grief-stricken anaconda trainer whose loyal companion gets tragically shredded by boat propellers.

Where The Bite Loses Its Venom

Inconsistent Tone: According to Roger Ebert’s review, the film starts strong with clever meta-commentary but gradually becomes more straightforward and obvious, leading to a predictably stupid finale.

Underutilized Talent: Thandiwe Newton, despite delivering a slightly weirder, more self-aware performance, feels criminally wasted as Claire—the woman Griff had a childhood crush on.

Shoddy Execution: The film preaches about the joy of creating with friends, yet its own production feels rushed and pieced together with gaping plot holes and intentionally cheesy CGI that doesn’t always land as intended.

Lost Satirical Edge: For a movie made by a major studio (Sony Pictures), the industry inside jokes ring somewhat hollow. The satire would bite harder coming from an actual independent comedy.

The Box Office and Critical Divide

Opening on Christmas Day against stiff competition, Anaconda pulled in respectable preview numbers exceeding $2 million. However, critical reception remains sharply divided—some calling it the year’s funniest film, others dismissing it as lazy and toothless.

For those following Hollywood’s remake culture, this represents both the promise and pitfalls of meta-sequels. The concept is inspired; the execution is merely adequate.

The Verdict: Satisfyingly Silly Despite Itself

Anaconda works best when embracing its inherent ridiculousness. The film advocates for dreaming big even when odds are stacked against you—a message that resonates despite uneven execution. As one review noted, it “slithers its way into your heart” through sheer charm and comedic energy.

Jack Black has one signature scene involving a wild boar carcass strapped to his back as anaconda bait—priceless stuff that justifies admission alone. The cameos from the original film’s cast add delightful fan-service without feeling forced.

If you enjoy Black and Rudd’s established personas and appreciate monster-movie hijinks wrapped in Hollywood satire, this delivers exactly what’s advertised. Just don’t expect it to transcend its formula or deliver the sharp commentary its premise promises.

Who Should Watch This?

Perfect for: Jack Black/Paul Rudd fans, those who loved The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, families seeking PG-13 holiday entertainment, viewers who appreciate meta-comedies dissecting Hollywood.

Skip if: You want genuinely scary creature features, expect sophisticated satire, or can’t tolerate intentionally bad CGI even when played for laughs.

The film ultimately succeeds more as a celebration of friendship and creative passion than as biting industry commentary—which might be enough for audiences craving lighthearted escapism during the holiday season.
