The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D “Dragon Range,” AMD’s fastest gaming CPU for laptops, is likely to be available on more platforms soon. AMD and ASUS collaborated last month to create the ROG SCAR 17 X3D, the first laptop to feature the new AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D CPU-powered design. This laptop not only had 16 Zen 4 cores, but it was also the first to use the 3D V-cache technology, which is part of the current Dragon Range” series.

However, since its release, the ASUS SCAR 17 X3D has been the only laptop offering with this CPU option. However, according to Golden Pig Upgrade (Bilibili), AMD expects to introduce the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D to additional laptops by the end of this year or early next year.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D has a 16-core and 32-thread arrangement in a twin CCD layout, similar to the Raphael Zen 4 desktop CPUs.

Each CCD has 32 MB of L3 cache for a total pool of 64 MB, however one of these CCDs has a 64.0 MB 3D V-cache stack, bringing the total pool to 128 MB. The CPU has a base clock speed of 2.3 GHz, which is 200 MHz slower than the Ryzen 9 7945HX, while the boost frequency stays at 5.4 GHz. It has a TDP of 55W or higher.

On power-constrained laptop platforms, a 3D V-Cache augmented CPU can deliver huge performance increases. Clock speeds alone result in a significant power demand, however the additional V-Cache can provide more speed versus a clock speed boost in a more effective manner. AMD boasted a 50% increase in gaming performance with its new 3D V-Cache technology for the 7945HX3D, and we can’t wait to see it in action on more laptops, especially if there are more cost-effective alternatives.
