AMD Ryzen 7 7840U “Pheonix” APU rumored to power the next-gen GPD Win Max Gaming Computer

The next-generation Ryzen 7 7840U “Phoenix” APU from AMD will power the GPD Win Max portable gaming computer, according to a leak. According to a leak in Geekbench 5 and BAPCO, it appears that GPD has begun testing its next-generation PC, which will make use of AMD’s newest APU hardware.

While we cannot say for certain whether an Intel flavour will be available this time, it is essentially confirmed that the company will introduce its next-gen handheld with the latest AMD APUs running a Phoenix design. The GPD Win Max 2 was available in both AMD and Intel flavours.

Another Ryzen 7040U Phoenix APU made for 15- to 28-watt laptop designs is the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. In addition to the Radeon 780M iGPU, which makes use of the RDNA 3 graphics architecture, the Ryzen 7 7840U has 8 cores and 16 threads and is based on the Zen 4 core architecture. The 768 cores in the 12 compute units on the GPU side will operate well above the 2.5 GHz frequency.

The Ryzen 7 7840U has already been observed operating in a number of benchmarks and still has a powerful 28W TDP design.

In the meantime, the laptop GPUs for RTX 2050 and GTX 1650 Ti are successfully contested by the RDNA 3 iGPU. According to the BAPCO listing, the GPD Win Max portable gaming PC used 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory with 7500 MB/s transfer rates. Although it’s unclear if the device’s size and dimensions have changed from the previous one, which had a 10.1-inch Bezel-less screen, the screen appears to be a 1920×1080 panel.

Even though the AMD Phoenix U-series are some of the most energy-efficient chips on the market and users would undoubtedly benefit from longer battery times, one can expect the console to come with an active cooling solution that will really help when switching to the higher TDP mode. Other than that, the performance figures provided are meaningless because it appears that the next-generation GPD Win Max handheld gaming PC is still in the early stages of testing.
