CES 2020: 7nm Zen 2 AMD Ryzen 4000U Mobile processors launched

Having launched the Ryzen 4000 mobile processors back in CES 2020, AMD promised us that laptops equipped with the latest processors would be arriving in Q1 and Q2 of 2020. Now, we have a few laptops running with the new 7nm Ryzen CPUs which indeed gives us the actual performance of these processors.

The 6 core Ryzen 5 4500U has been spotted running on the Acer Swift 3 SF314-42 notebook which was originally announced during CES 2020 alongside other variants powered by the Intel Ice Lake CPUs. The Intel and AMD variants of the new Swift 3 have nearly similar features except the Project Athena and Thunderbolt 3 on the Intel variant.

So, in the leaked Geekbench 5.1 benchmark we see the Acer Swift 3 being compared to the Core i5-10210U powered Dell XPS 13 7390 and the Core i7-9750H powered Dell XPS 15 7590.

AMD Ryzen 5 4500U destroys the Intel Core i5-102010U in Geekbench

The Ryzen 5 4500U scores a huge 1,076 points in single-core and 4,323 points in the multi-core test. Whereas, the Core i5-10210U scores 867 in single-core and 2,872 in multi-core.

It is great to see the Ryzen CPU to score even better in single-core tests although as the Ryzen 5 4500U lacks SMT support which decreases the multi-core score it has two extra cores than the Core i5-10210U. This shows the improvement of the Zen 2 architecture which is impressive compared to Intel.

Comparing the Ryzen 5 4500U with the Core i7-9750H won’t be a good thing but we can get a fair idea by doing so. The Intel Core i7-9750H has higher clocks, threads, and TDP so, it’s about 13.5% faster in single-core and about 18% faster in multi-core but it will be interesting to see how this competes against 8C/16T Ryzen 7 4800H.

If we compare the newer Ryzen 5 4500U with the older Ryzen 5 3500U which score only 886 points in single-core and 3,067 points in multi-core this is a huge improvement over last-gen which we did expect from a 7nm CPU. Also, even though we see the addition of more cores and higher clocks still the processor remains within a 15W TDP envelope.

As the performance benchmarks look impressive, it will be interesting to see how manufacturers price the laptops and how the Ryzen 4000 APUs perform in daily life. In the coming days, laptops with Ryzen 4000 processors would start shipping and more models will be coming in Q2 2020.
