AMD reveils 2nd gen Threadripper with up to 32 cores

AMD announces their premium, Intel beating, and record-breaking processors – 2nd gen Threadripper. Know more of its release dates, specs & features in detail

AMD has always been known to bring some evolution since the release of Ryzen processors. This year in April, they brought the 2nd gen Ryzen processors that completely blew off the first gen with its performance. They kept the cores same but increased the performance and introduced some awesome new features that Intel couldn’t think off…

At the Computex 2018, they announced the Threadripper 2900X series, with up to 32 cores. They told that they will soon bring them to market after its testing.

And now, the time has come for AMD to unveil the record-breaking processors to the market. This time there will 4 processors in the 2nd gen Threadripper series. One named the WX series(which is intended for workstation) and the other is X series.

The processors are now available for pre-orders from AMD’s official site. As we had seen a leap in the performance of 2nd gen Ryzen, and so you can expect a huge increase in Threadripper 2nd gen as well…

With no further delay, let’s talk more of the specs of the processor:

Specs:

The 2nd gen Threadrippers will use the Zen+ 12nm architecture that was seen in the recent Ryzen 2nd Generation processors. That’s why you can expect them to have more performance, lesser power consumption and yes an increase in the number of cores… Also, there will be a huge increase in the clock speeds that will fire up the performance…

There’s also a new set of SKUs intended to cater to customers who are exclusively interested in Threadripper as a rendering or HPC solution.

X SERIES:

Ryzen Threadripper 2920X:

  • 12-cores, 24-threads, clocked at 3.5GHz to 4.3GHz
  • 32MB L3 cache
  • 180W TDP
  • 64 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes

Ryzen Threadripper 2950X:

  • 16-cores, 32-threads, clocked at 3.5GHz to 4.4GHz
  • 32MB L3 cache
  • 180W TDP
  • 64 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes

Performance

The main highlight of AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 2nd Generation lineup has to be the 32-core and 64-thread 2990WX. There has been a major increase in clock speed with support up to 4.2GHz which is more than the 4.0GHz, seen in the previous Threadripper.

The chip achieved a world-record Cinebench R15 multi-threaded CPU test scores in the single-socket desktop processor category. This makes the cheap greatest and the best, and it is highly recommended for professional content creators, developers, and PC enthusiasts.

The 2nd-gen Threadripper is also highly overclockable. The AMD’s overclocking team has managed to take the Threadripper 2990WX CPU to over 5.1GHz using liquid nitrogen cooling, achieving a record-breaking Cinebench R15 multi-threaded CPU test score of 7,618,

It is comfortably beating the current single socket record set by Intel’s Core i9-7980XE CPU at 5,828 points.

AMD’s new 12-core and 16-core chips are clocked slightly higher (7.5 percent and 10 percent for maximum boost, respectively, with the 2950X’s base clock coming up by 3 percent).

Cooling, Motherboard & others

These processors will require heavy cooling, so AMD has partnered with third parties for better liquid cooling than it’s provided one. You can have a look at that from here.

Luckily, AMD is also sticking to the same TR4 Socket, so anyone looking to upgrade once Threadripper Generation 2 drops shouldn’t have to worry about buying a new board.

2nd Gen Ryzen™ Threadripper™ processors will work on future-proof X399 motherboards with a simple BIOS update. Here are the motherboards that will support the new beasts:

The Ryzen™ Threadripper™ processor can support Workstation Standard DDR4 ECC (Error Correcting Mode) Memory to keep you tight, tuned and perfectly in sync.

The processors will also include AMD’s newest features like AMD StoreMi, AMD SenseMi, AMD Ryzen Master Utility and others…

Price & Availability

The processors will be available in a timeline given in the picture above. The price of the processors are:

Ryzen Threadripper 2920X:

$649 will be available from Oct 2018

Ryzen Threadripper 2950X:

$899 will be available from Aug 31, 2018

Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX:

$1,299 will be available from Oct 2018

Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX:

$1,799 will be available from Aug 13, 2018

The current competitor for the 2920X based on price would be the Core i7-7820X. It is an eight-core / 16-thread CPU with a maximum Turbo clock of 4.3GHz and a $599 price tag.

With 50% more cores, the 2920X should be much better to this chip, while Intel’s 7900X remains the best point of comparison for the updated 2950X.

The 24-core Threadripper 2970WX and 32-core Threadripper 2990WX seem to get no competition to Intel’s High-End Desktop Lineup. The 18-core Core i9-7980XE offers the closest comparison and equivalent price, at $1,799.

And, we see that both of the high-end processors comfortably beats Intel’s highest-end processor. This makes the 2nd gen Threadripper “Intel-beating” as well…

To wrap things up, we quote Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Business Group, AMD:

“Our goal with 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors was to push the performance boundaries even further and continue innovating at the bleeding edge. Beginning on August 13, creators, enthusiasts, and gamers everywhere will get to experience the benefits of these new products.”
