Not many film families in Indian cinema can boast a legacy spanning over eight decades — but the Akkineni family is not like most. From the legendary Akkineni Nageswara Rao, who literally moved the Telugu film industry from Chennai to Hyderabad, to the current generation of Naga Chaitanya and Akhil Akkineni lighting up the silver screen — this is a dynasty built not just on stardom, but on sheer cinematic devotion. Here’s everything you need to know about the iconic Akkineni family tree.

First Generation: The Founding Legend — ANR
Akkineni Nageswara Rao began his film journey in 1941 with Dharma Patni and is regarded as one of the two pillars of the Telugu film industry, alongside NT Rama Rao. In a career spanning 75 years, he earned the legendary title Natasamrat — the Emperor of Acting. Two of his most lasting contributions to Telugu cinema: he spearheaded the shift of the industry from Chennai to Hyderabad, and he founded Annapurna Studios in 1975 — still one of the most respected production houses in South Indian cinema.
His final film, the multi-generational family drama Manam (2014), is considered a fitting and emotional farewell to a career unlike any other

Second Generation: Nagarjuna — The Superstar Son
Nagarjuna is the eldest son of ANR and has acted in over 100 films, bridging both Telugu and Tamil cinema. He made his acting debut as a child artist in the 1967 film Sudigundalu before entering as a leading actor with the 1986 Telugu movie Vikram.
Nagarjuna’s personal life is equally layered. His first marriage to Lakshmi Daggubati — daughter of veteran producer D. Ramanaidu — produced son Naga Chaitanya. This is also how Naga Chaitanya became a cousin to Rana Daggubati, linking two of Telugu cinema’s most powerful families. His second marriage to actress Amala gave the industry Akhil Akkineni.
Third Generation: The New Akkinenis
Naga Chaitanya made his entry in 2009 with the movie Josh and is now a prominent actor in Tollywood. He was previously married to Samantha Ruth Prabhu before the couple parted ways, and he later got engaged to actress Sobhita Dhulipala.
Sumanth is the eldest grandson of ANR and the son of ANR’s daughter Sathyavathi Akkineni — making him the first actor from the third generation of the Akkineni family. He debuted with Prema Katha in 1999, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, and is now a partner at Annapurna Studios.
Sushanth Akkineni is the son of ANR’s daughter Naga Susheela Akkineni and made his debut in 2008 with Kalidasu.
The Film That United All Generations: Manam (2014)
The 2014 film Manam remains the most powerful symbol of the Akkineni legacy — bringing ANR, Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya, and Akhil Akkineni together on screen for the first and last time. A cinematic moment that Telugu audiences will never forget.
