Airbnb Just Became a Full Travel Platform — Car Rentals, Grocery Delivery, FIFA World Cup Experiences and More

Airbnb is no longer just a place to book a home. On May 21, 2026, the company announced its biggest product expansion since launch — adding car rentals, grocery delivery, airport pickups, luggage storage, boutique hotels, FIFA World Cup 2026 experiences, and a suite of AI-powered travel tools to the app, all in one update.

“Travel shouldn’t just be convenient. It should be meaningful. The best trips help you explore, learn, and come home a little different than when you left,” said Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb.

New Services — Every Part of Your Trip, Covered

Airbnb is adding four new service categories this summer, each solving a specific friction point in travel:

Airport pickups are now live in over 160 cities worldwide. Grocery delivery is available in over 25 US cities, with hosts in select cities able to pre-stock your home before check-in. Car rentals are launching this summer, with the app suggesting the right vehicle for your group size.

For Indian travellers heading to the US, Europe, or Southeast Asia, the airport pickup and luggage storage integrations alone remove two of the most stressful parts of international arrivals.

FIFA World Cup 2026 — Once-in-a-Lifetime Experiences

This is the headline for football fans. Airbnb is offering exclusive FIFA World Cup 2026 experiences across six host cities. Guests can join World Cup Champions Abby Wambach and Julie Foudy for an intimate USA vs Australia watch party in LA, or step onto the pitch to train with Argentine football icon and former Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano.

With no confirmed Indian broadcaster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup yet, Airbnb is offering Indian football fans who are travelling to North America for the tournament a layer of access that no streaming service can match.

Boutique Hotels — No Big Chains

Thousands of boutique and independent hotels are arriving on Airbnb across 20 top global destinations — New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, Singapore, and more — with each property hand-selected for its neighbourhood location, design, and hospitality. No big chains. Each hotel also comes with a price match guarantee and up to 15% Airbnb credit toward a future home booking when you stay.

This is a direct play against Booking.com and Expedia, which have long dominated the boutique hotel discovery space online.

AI Features — Plan, Compare, and Get Help

Airbnb is rolling out four AI-powered tools across the app:

AI Review Highlights synthesise Airbnb’s one billion guest reviews per listing, surfacing what matters most to you — location, family-friendliness, amenities — without requiring you to read hundreds of individual reviews before booking.

AI-Powered Comparison lets you save homes to a wishlist and generates a side-by-side summary of each — covering location context, standout amenities, and best fit for your trip. Rolling out later this year.

Shared Itinerary puts your reservations, nearby restaurants, experiences, and attractions on a single group map — with travel times from your stay and the ability for everyone to plan together in real time.

AI Customer Support, now available in 11 languages worldwide, is rated the best AI support assistant in travel. The assistant knows your trip details, offers interactive resolution cards in chat, and will be extended to voice support later this year so you can get answers over a call.

What This Means for Indian Travellers

India is one of Airbnb’s fastest-growing markets globally, and while several of the new services — grocery delivery, car rentals — are US-first at launch, the airport pickup network (160 cities worldwide) and luggage storage (175 cities) are live globally today. The AI customer support in 11 languages and the boutique hotel expansion in cities like Singapore, London, and Paris are immediately relevant for Indian outbound travellers.

The FIFA World Cup experiences and the Connections Travel Map — launching later this summer — are the two features most worth watching for the Indian community.

The Bottom Line

Since launching Experiences and Services last year, millions of people have booked stays, explored with locals, and had private chefs cook them dinner, all on Airbnb. This summer’s update is a step-change: Airbnb is now competing with Google Travel, Booking.com, Expedia, and Instacart simultaneously — from a single app, with AI connecting every layer. For travellers who want the entire trip handled in one place, the 2026 version of Airbnb makes that case more convincingly than anything the company has built before.
