Air India has temporarily reduced 22% of its domestic flights, as the loss-making airline battles the crippling impact of soaring fuel prices. This domestic cut follows a 27% reduction in international flights announced just two weeks earlier on May 13, 2026 — making it a double blow to the airline’s capacity in a single month.
The airline operates roughly 4,400 weekly flights — about 3,600 domestic and 800 international. A 22% cut in domestic operations translates to over 790 weekly services gone, at least temporarily.
In its official statement, Air India said the adjustments are “driven by the sustained impact of high fuel prices on overall operations” and that it will monitor conditions closely with a view to restoring frequencies when things stabilise.

Air India’s losses stood at over Rs. 26,700 crore in the financial year ended March 2026, according to Singapore Airlines Group’s annual report. Singapore Airlines holds a 25.1% stake in Air India, with the Tata Group holding the rest.
