Ahn Hyo Seop Called His New Character a “Pineapple Bun” in Sold Out on You — And That Description Is Absolutely Perfect

If you needed one more reason to be excited about “Sold Out on You”, Ahn Hyo Seop just delivered it — and he did it with the most unexpectedly charming character description we’ve heard in K-drama press coverage in a while. The actor opened up about his role as Matthew Lee ahead of the SBS drama’s April 22 premiere, and everything he shared only deepens the anticipation.

Sold Out on You: Drama Overview

Why Ahn Hyo Seop Called Matthew Lee a “Pineapple Bun”

When asked to describe his character Matthew Lee in a single keyword, Ahn Hyo Seop — without missing a beat — said “pineapple bun.” His reasoning is genuinely lovely: Matthew appears cold and rigid on the outside but is deeply warm and caring on the inside. Someone who quietly takes care of everyone around him without making it obvious. As Ahn Hyo Seop put it, Matthew is the kind of person who needs attention and love too — which made him all the more compelling to play.

The character is fascinatingly layered — a young farmer, CEO of a raw-materials company, and cosmetics researcher all at once. Ahn Hyo Seop shared that he focused heavily on Matthew’s gaze when working — projecting flawless professionalism in his field — while letting a quietly clumsy, almost endearing side emerge in his relationships with village locals.

A Rom-Com Reunion Fans Have Been Waiting For

Sold Out on You reunites Ahn Hyo Seop with SBS for the first time since “Business Proposal” — the mega-hit romantic comedy that made him a household name globally. The actor admitted he feels both a sense of trust and slight embarrassment at being called the “SBS son,” but is genuinely thrilled to return to light-hearted comedy after years of more intense dramas.

The storyline follows the unexpected romance between Matthew Lee, a perfectionist juggling multiple careers on a farm, and Dam Ye Jin (Chae Won Bin), a top home shopping host dealing with severe insomnia. On paper, it sounds like the perfect recipe for the kind of feel-good romantic comedy that K-drama audiences devour.

Ahn Hyo Seop perfectly summarised the show’s spirit: “This is a drama viewers can watch while they are eating — something that offers comfort, even just for a moment.” That’s exactly what we need right now.
