Adria Arjona Wins Maxima Role in Superman: Man of Tomorrow Sequel

Adria Arjona has officially secured the role of Maxima in DC Studios’ highly anticipated Superman sequel “Man of Tomorrow,” directed by James Gunn. The actress beat out three other finalists, including Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten, following an intense audition process in Atlanta. Arjona brings her star power from critically acclaimed series like “Andor” to the DC Universe, taking on the role of the alien warrior queen in a film that promises to deliver major action and compelling character dynamics. The casting decision marks an exciting moment for both the actress and James Gunn’s expanding DC Studios cinematic universe.

Who Is Adria Arjona and Why She Matters

Adria Arjona is best known for her role in the critically acclaimed Star Wars series “Andor,” where she delivered powerful performances that caught the attention of major studios. She has also appeared in films like “Hit Man” alongside Glen Powell and was part of James Gunn’s produced film “The Belko Experiment.” Arjona’s selection for Maxima represents a significant step in her career, as she joins an already star-studded ensemble cast for what promises to be one of DC Studios’ biggest releases.

The actress was a popular choice among fans and industry insiders for various DC roles, with some speculating she might play Wonder Woman. However, Gunn clarified these rumors, confirming instead that Arjona tested for and secured the role of Maxima. Her casting signals Gunn’s commitment to bringing A-list talent to his DC Universe projects, following the massive success of the first Superman film, which grossed over $618 million worldwide.

Understanding Maxima and Her Role in the Story

Maxima is an alien warrior and queen from the planet Almerac, first introduced in Action Comics #645 in 1989 by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez. In the comics, she is both an antagonist and a potential love interest for Superman, as she believes his strength makes him the only man worthy of becoming her husband. She initially appears as a tyrannical force obsessed with the Man of Steel, but in later storylines reforms and joins the Justice League.

In “Man of Tomorrow,” Maxima will be part of a larger ensemble cast that includes David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Lars Eidinger as the main villain Brainiac. The film’s plot centers on Superman and Lex Luthor putting aside their differences to work together against the shared threat of the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac. With this setup, Maxima’s character likely plays a crucial role in the political and romantic dynamics of the story.

Production Timeline and Release Details

James Gunn wrote and will direct “Man of Tomorrow,” which is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Production began in April 2026 in Atlanta and is expected to continue through the summer.
