Acer Commits to Conscious Technology to Help Tackle Climate Change

Acer Inc. announced its “Conscious Technology” initiative during a press conference in Dubai today. This vision emphasizes the creation and implementation of technology that considers the future. The event also provided insights into Acer’s ongoing efforts to combat climate change and included the unveiling of two novel energy storage solutions and a climate-focused exhibition that displayed technological and product concepts to the public.

Acer Unveils “Conscious Technology” Vision to Help Tackle Climate Change

Acer has become a member of the RE100 initiative and is committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2035. The company has also pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. As one of the leading ICT companies in the world, Acer aims to increase its positive environmental impact through collective actions. Over half of their critical suppliers have either joined the RE100 initiative or set science-based carbon reduction targets (SBT). By 2025, Acer hopes to incorporate 20-30% post-consumer recycled plastic into their computers and monitors, a target for which they reached 17% in 2022.

The press conference highlighted several of Acer’s initiatives, including their Vero product line, which is largely made from recycled materials, Project Humanity which encourages employees globally to adopt greener practices, and the Earthion platform which gathers supply chain partners and their employees to address environmental issues through innovative, integrated solutions. The Earthion initiative includes reducing sea logistics emissions through biofuel usage and researching sustainable packaging materials with manufacturing partners.

Acer Chairman and CEO Jason Chen emphasized the need to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy to combat climate change. He stated, “In 2022, the Acer Group reached 44% of renewable electricity usage. To reach our goal of 100%, we will rely heavily on solar and wind power in energy storage technology. We are taking definitive steps towards promoting circular economies and providing solutions that minimize our negative impacts on the environment.”

As part of its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, Acer is broadening its footprint in the energy storage industry. It offers solutions across the entire supply chain, from household to industrial applications and from manufacturing to application. This includes both front-of-meter and behind-the-meter solutions to aid in energy transition. The company’s investment in battery cell technologies has resulted in the unveiling of new energy storage solutions, extending its portfolio.

The exhibition, titled “Conscious Technology for a Brighter Tomorrow,” showcases Acer’s ongoing climate initiatives and the technology designed with the future in mind. Displayed at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, the exhibition features products and services under four lifestyle concepts:

  • Concept for Working: This concept involves an on-demand subscription service that provides access to Acer’s extensive product portfolio. Upgrades, services, and repairs can be availed with just a click, enabling customers to actively participate in extending the lifespan of digital devices and reducing the need for new resources.
  • Concept for Learning: This concept focuses on computer hardware and software that enable schools to diminish their carbon footprint. Students can learn in a climate-positive environment using refurbished laptops and tools that promote conscious use.
  • Concept for Moving: This concept introduces a network of mobility stations equipped with charging hubs and compact e-bikes and e-scooters. Tools such as data-informed urban planning and micro-mobility infrastructure prediction are also offered, enhancing transportation access for more individuals and aiding in smart city infrastructure planning.
  • Concept for Living: This concept presents a highly compatible system with a mobile app that allows users to control both existing and new smart appliances, making homes more climate resilient. The app enables users to manage their energy consumption more efficiently and gain insight into the energy distribution of appliances.
