Mastering the Underworld: A Beginner’s Guide to Hades 2

Supergiant Games’ highly anticipated sequel, Hades 2, has arrived, and it throws players into a thrilling roguelike experience.

While veterans of the first game may have a head start, Melinoe’s combat style and the Underworld’s new mechanics demand a fresh approach. This beginner’s guide equips you with essential tips and tricks to conquer the Underworld without (too much) frustration.

Beyond Enemy Patterns: Uncovering Hidden Riches

Hades 2 goes beyond memorizing enemy attacks. The Underworld brims with hidden collectibles crucial for progression. These include plants, minerals, and even fishing spots. Unlike glowing treasures, some resources blend seamlessly into the environment.

Silver deposits, for instance, lack the telltale sparkle, making them easy to overlook. Likewise, some plants require a keen eye to spot amidst foliage.

The first world’s fishing locations pose the biggest challenge. The foggy waters of Erebus can conceal the subtle ripples that indicate a lurking fish.

Invest in Tools, Not Just Weapons

Melinoe, despite her magical prowess, arrives in the Underworld woefully unprepared. Essential tools like pickaxes and fishing rods require unlocking with silver, the same currency used for weapons.

However, Melinoe’s starting staff can carry you through the initial runs. Prioritize tools over weapons, as crafting recipes and permanent upgrades hinge on the materials these tools gather.

Experiment with Your Arcana

Melinoe possesses a deck of tarot cards, each offering permanent buffs upon unlocking with ashes. While sticking to a familiar set might be tempting, resist the urge.

Spend your ashes on new cards with each run (unless you have a specific goal in mind). Experiment with different builds to discover what works best for your playstyle. Unlocking cards also reveals adjacent cards, potentially leading to even more powerful options.

Embrace Failure, But Play Smart: Hades 2

Roguelikes thrive on failure, and Hades 2 is no exception. However, the game offers more forgiveness than some of its peers. Unlike titles like Dead Cells, Hades 2 provides ample opportunities to upgrade and prepare for future runs after a failed attempt.

Most boss fights have hidden mechanics waiting to be discovered, and new regions introduce fresh threats that demand strategic adjustments. Failure is inevitable, so learn from it and adapt your approach.

Calculated Caution is Key

While venturing forth boldly is tempting, a measured approach is crucial for success. You need to make steady progress to gather materials for Melinoe’s upgrades.

This means making informed choices about which rooms to tackle. When low on health, prioritize rooms with Centaur Hearts (indicated by a heart icon) over mini-bosses (marked by a skull) for a health boost. Careful exploration also allows you to observe enemy and boss behaviors, aiding in formulating strategies for future encounters.

Master the Art of Sprinting

Melinoe’s sprint grants a precious moment of invincibility, allowing you to escape tight spaces or break through enemy encirclements.

However, this invincibility only applies at the beginning of the sprint. Utilize it strategically, keeping in mind the brief cooldown before you can sprint again. Don’t trade one perilous situation for another by exhausting your sprint prematurely.

Embrace Your Cast

Unlike Zagreus’s cast ability, Melinoe’s shines brightly. It conjures a magic circle that freezes enemies in place, with the charged omega version dealing damage. This ability is invaluable for crowd control. Use it to neutralize speedy foes, create bottlenecks in enemy formations, or simply buy yourself breathing room to formulate your next move.

Don’t Be Stingy with Magic

Melinoe’s omega attacks (enhanced versions of her basic attacks, special, and cast) require a significant magic investment. Using them excessively or at inopportune moments can leave you without the power you need when facing tougher foes.

However, unlike health and armor, magic fully replenishes between rooms. Don’t be afraid to unleash your omega attacks (wisely), as their benefits outweigh the temporary magic depletion. If you find yourself running out of magic frequently, consider tarot cards that enhance magic capacity or prioritize rooms that increase Melinoe’s maximum magic during a run.

Remember the Cauldron

The Cauldron, located at the Crossroads (your base camp), houses the key to upgrading your home base. Unlocking incantations through the Cauldron’s purification rituals grants far-reaching benefits beyond aesthetics.

These incantations attract new merchants to the Crossroads, introduce helpful locations and boons in the Underworld, and even enhance the healing power of wells. While the initial selection of incantations may be limited, check back after each run to see if the Cauldron has brewed up something new.

Hades 2 presents a rich and challenging world to explore. With these helpful tips in your arsenal, you’ll be well on your way to conquering the Underworld
