NVIDIA DLSS 5 Arrives September 3rd — And It’s Bringing Hollywood-Grade Lighting to NBA 2K27

DLSS just evolved from a performance booster into a visual fidelity engine, and NBA 2K27 is the first game to show what that actually looks like.

For years, DLSS has meant one thing: faster frame rates through AI upscaling and frame generation. With DLSS 5, NVIDIA is pushing the technology into new territory entirely — using AI not just to boost speed, but to add cinematic-grade lighting and material detail that real-time engines could never render on their own. The first game to get it is NBA 2K27, and it arrives September 3rd.

DLSS 5: What’s Actually New

DLSS 5 introduces something NVIDIA calls 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. Instead of generating images from a text prompt like typical generative AI, it takes the game engine’s own rendered frame — geometry, textures, lighting, all artist-designed — as a fixed foundation, then layers in AI-generated lighting and material realism on top.

Why This Matters More Than a Typical DLSS Update

Previous DLSS versions reconstructed existing scene data for higher resolution or smoother frame rates. DLSS 5 does something different — it adds detail that was never in the scene to begin with, like realistic subsurface scattering on skin, natural light passing through hair, and deeper contact shadows, effects previously reserved for offline cinematic rendering. Crucially, it runs deterministically and frame-by-frame, avoiding the flicker or inconsistency typical generative models produce, so a player’s face won’t subtly shift between frames.

Developers also get real creative control here — structure and tone intensity sliders, plus semantic masking that lets artists boost realism on environments while protecting character likenesses, addressing a real concern for a game built around scanning real NBA and WNBA athletes.

Setting It Up

Players will need the new GeForce Game Ready Driver dropping alongside the feature, then enable “DLSS Neural Rendering” from NBA 2K27’s video settings — it can also be toggled live during gameplay via F9.

For readers building or upgrading a gaming rig around this generation of GPUs, TechnoSports’ recent breakdown of Samsung’s new P9 portable SSD covering fast local storage for high-res game libraries is a solid companion read, given how much VRAM and storage-hungry neural rendering features tend to demand.

Bottom Line

DLSS 5 marks a genuine shift in what real-time graphics can look like, not just how fast they run. NBA 2K27 is the proving ground, but NVIDIA says more titles will get 3D-Guided Neural Rendering support in the coming months — worth watching if photorealism in gaming is your thing.
