Real Madrid Secure Raúl Asencio’s Future with €1 Billion Release Clause in New Contract

Real Madrid have been proactive this summer in both strengthening their squad and safeguarding the future of their key assets. After confirming arrivals like Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Franco Mastantuono, the club has turned its attention inward to secure the services of one of its most promising homegrown defenders. Raúl Asencio has officially signed a new long-term contract with Los Blancos, ensuring his stay at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2031.

The plan, which was first hinted at earlier in March, has now been fully realized. Notably, Asencio’s new agreement comes with an eye-watering €1 billion release clause, placing him among Real Madrid’s most valued players, alongside global superstars like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

Rising Star Amid a Difficult Season

While the 2024-25 campaign was largely forgettable for the Spanish giants—with Barcelona clinching both La Liga and Copa del Rey honors, and Arsenal humiliating them in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages—there were still silver linings. One of those bright sparks was Raúl Asencio, the 22-year-old defender who seized his opportunity in the first team.

Asencio’s breakthrough came in November when Eder Militao suffered a devastating knee injury, ruling him out for the rest of the season. Thrust into the limelight, the young center-back showcased remarkable composure, maturity, and consistency. Week after week, he earned Xabi Alonso’s trust, cementing his place in the starting lineup as Real Madrid battled through the remainder of the campaign.

Contract Confirmation and Future Prospects

“And this has been amplified by the fact that Asencio, who is currently involved in a legal case, has now penned a new six-year Real Madrid contract, as confirmed by The Athletic. And as part of the agreement, his release clause will increase to €1bn – the same as the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.”

The deal signals Real Madrid’s immense faith in the Spanish youngster’s potential. However, Asencio’s future role remains slightly uncertain, especially with the arrival of Dean Huijsen and the impending return of Militao. Additionally, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba add further competition in the central defensive ranks. Even Aurelien Tchouameni has been deployed as a makeshift defender when required.

Tactical flexibility under Xabi Alonso will be key. Alonso, who favored a three-at-the-back setup at Bayer Leverkusen, may transition to a back four or other formations at Real Madrid, depending on how best to harness the club’s enviable midfield talent. Whether Asencio becomes an automatic starter or a rotational option, his long-term value to the squad is unquestionable.

Shirt Number Switch Confirmed

Further underlining his elevation within the squad, journalist Miguel Angel Diaz of COPE has revealed that Asencio is set for a shirt number upgrade. Having donned the #35 shirt last season, the defender will receive a prestigious first-team number (between 1 and 25) for the upcoming campaign, in line with his new senior status.

However, there is a nostalgic footnote to this transformation. Before he officially switches to his new number, Asencio will continue wearing the #35 jersey during the FIFA Club World Cup later this year—a symbolic gesture marking the transition from promising youth player to fully-fledged first-team regular.

A Good Move in Madrid’s Long-Term Planning

Real Madrid’s decision to tie Raúl Asencio down to a six-year deal is more than just prudent squad management—it’s a clear declaration of intent. Florentino Pérez and his board are ensuring that the club’s foundations are built not just on marquee signings, but also on nurturing emerging talents capable of leading the next generation.

With a €1 billion release clause, Real Madrid have effectively slammed the door on potential suitors, emphasizing that Asencio is a vital piece in their project moving forward. Whether as a defensive cornerstone or a key rotational player, the 22-year-old will have a defining role under Xabi Alonso’s stewardship.
